I just hope that this is bullshit, because I really expect better from JJ Abrams. He is one of the few directors in Hollywood who has shown sensitivity towards POC roles. He was actually concerned about the implications of casting John Cho as Sulu, so to engage in something as blatant as straight-up whitewashing (which would be so much more egregious), would be incredibly baffling.
