"Ianto is hard and soft, light and dark, reserved yet passionate. He is a contrast in and of itself. And he puzzles Jack. To Jack he is a perfect embodiment of why the human race are special, he is a symbol, an idea and for this reason, Jack will never forget him."
That is by far the most perfect description of Ianto (and how Jack feels about him) that I have ever read.
And this is why Ianto is the heart of Torchwood, not Gwen (RTD totally dropped the ball). While the bad things that happen to her get fixed, Ianto goes through horrors: Canary Warf, Lisa, etc. and he learns to live with the nightmares, and find a reason and purpose in life again. He does it quietly, with strength and grace. And yes, the fact that he's *not* perfect make him even more amazing. I'd love to think Jack came to the realization you have him doing in this story, because if not then he never deserved Ianto.

I honestly don't know how I wrote that summary, but I guess some of the inspiration was from the new Batman films. (lol)
Speaking of Batman, your point, "Ianto goes through horrors: Canary Wharf, Lisa, etc. and he learns to live with the nightmares" reminds me of something which was said in the film: "Why do we fall down? So we can learn to pick ourselves up again." Aptly summarises Ianto's life. The fact that Ianto pretty much did it all on his own, makes it more of a well, heroic feat really.
I totally agree with you on pretty much everything you've mentioned. I think (well I hope) Jack did understand that Ianto wasn't perfect (especially since he knew about the Lisa thing) and he knows Ianto's flaws; e.g. Jack knew that Ianto's father wasn't a master tailor and was just going along with it.
Thank you so much for the review!
