I didn't know that about the air quality in Afghanistan.

The water is probably from a bore, as it sounds exactly like the town water where I live. It's not harmful, but it tastes awful, coats everything (we have to use special cleaning products in the dishwasher and toilet) and destroys electric kettles! I'm glad you have bottled water to drink.

I didn't get any briefings on the air quality here, and I don't think I've seen a news article about it either. Although I do read many articles about the terrible air quality in Beijing. What's sad is that superficially this place looks like Colorado, one of the most beautiful states. But a Colorado with no environmental regulations.

How can you stand to live someplace with bad water? Do you have to buy bottled water?

At the moment, we buy bottled water for drinking. Most of the town either buys bottled water (we get great big bottles delivered, and it's not too expensive) or has rainwater tanks. In the country town where I grew up, the water had red clay sediment in it, plus heavy chlorine, so it had to be boiled then left to settle for 24 hours before putting it through the jug with the filter. You could tell when the chlorine was really heavy because my brother's blond hair would go green! The town where I went to school had similar quality water, so we all just brought drink bottles. This is the case for many small towns all over Australia.

The really annoying thing about the town where I grew up, though, was that it was actually surrounded by three enormous dams full of fresh drinking water - all of which piped water straight to Melbourne, and none for the locals! Melbourne water, of course, is fresh and delicious, and that's one of the few things I miss about the city.

Ouch! Not happy to hear the army does not consider the stress and strain of such an environment on their personnel.
Glad you take suppliments, but still. Here's hoping you can go home soon and get that stuff out of your system...

My sister and I are health food nuts and so I know enough to take these supplements, but all the people around me don't. No M.D. will ever tell you to take supplements. That's witch doctor-ism!

The Department of Defense is still trying to argue that the personnel who lived next to the Bagram Air Base open burn pits didn't really suffer any respiratory damage from the polluted smoke drifting overhead.

Thanks for the good wishes, I think if I keep taking supplements I'll be okay.
