Hmmmm...I am quite behind with everything due to visiting Cambridge. Trying to read through Aristotle's politics for tomorrow, which is annoyingly difficult since I'm feeling rather distracted. Think I shall, in fact, have to try to stay in Brighton until Easter, since there is just so much to do!

Anyway...

Dear Rachel,
This in fact is standard Protestant evangelical doctrine-people like Billy Graham and Dr Ian Paisley would say that.
They would argue that,if you read the Bible, there is no clear reference to Purgatory-but a lot of clear references to Heaven and Hell.
But,of course, this gets back to the basic argument of whether authority comes from the Bible or from the Church.
However,Biblical fundamentalists must believe that at least one decision of the Church had authority-namely the decision which books comprise the Bible!!Otherwise they would end up believing in the authority of Scripture-but without knowing what books "Scripture" is!!!

Well, the person I was arguing with is an Anglican with Catholic and Russian Orthodox tendencies...certainly not an Evangelical!

I think it's pretty standard Protestant doctrine generally. I don't entirely understand the connection, but I think Luther thought that Purgatory had been made up in order to justify the sale of indulgences, or something.

The Anglican 39 Articles say:

The Romish Doctrine concerning Purgatory, Pardons, Worshipping and Adoration, as well of Images as of Relics, and also Invocation of Saints, is a fond thing, vainly invented, and grounded upon no warranty of Scripture, but rather repugnant to the Word of God.
