“What are you doing, Adam?”
“What does it look like I’m doing, Lilly?”
“Well it appears that you’re taking off your pants.”
“How very perceptive of you, as that is exactly what I’m doing.”
“But why are you taking off your pants, Adam?”
“I don’t know, Lilly. Maybe because it is ridiculously hot in here and I am almost literally boiling alive. Honestly, I don’t know how you’ve lasted this long without taking anything off. You’re wearing more clothes than me.”
Lilly looked at Adam a little more closely and realized that he was sweating quite a bit, despite the fact that he had already taking off his shirt and pants. Then she looked at herself and saw that she wasn’t sweating in the least bit, even though she was wearing a hoodie over a long sleeved shirt and a pair of jeans. It wasn’t surprising to her that this was the case, as she was not like everyone else. She didn’t really ever feel hot or cold except in the very vaguest of senses. She could go outside in the snow with bare feet and know that her feet were cold, but she wouldn’t necessarily feel cold.
But since she didn’t really like people knowing she was that much different from them… “You know what, you’re right. It is hot in here.” And with that she stripped down to her underwear while Adam watched and practically salivated at the sight of it. She knew that he was attracted to her. And if she was being honest with herself, she actually kind of liked him as well. But she didn’t want to go down that road again. She had been hurt too many times already.
“Damn, Lilly!” Exclaimed Adam, putting his tongue back in his mouth. ‘I knew you had a rockin’ body, but damn… You’re starting to make me not regret getting stuck in this sauna with you. Granted, if nobody finds us in here we’ll probably die. But I can think of worse ways to go.”
Lilly afforded him a wan smile. His boorish comment about her body aside, he was right about dying in here. Well, at least partly right. He would die in here if nobody came to their rescue. She would survive though, as she always did. Every man she had ever been in a relationship with was now dead. And now it was likely going to happen again. Not that she and Adam were in any kind of “relationship.” But it was closest thing to a relationship than she had had in a very long time.
“Some first date this turned out to be, right?” His comment broke her away from her thoughts.
“I told you before, this isn’t a date.”
“But I tried to make it romantic so that you would reconsider your view on the matter.”
“So just let me get this straight here. Your idea of ‘romantic’ is to sneak us into a resort in the middle of the night. Then get us trapped inside a sauna so that we could die a slow, heat induced, death?”
“Well when you put it that way you make it sound like I got us trapped on purpose. Anyone could have made the same mistake.”
“Yes. I suppose that anyone could have blatantly ignored the ‘Out Of Order’ sign on the door.”
“Would it have killed them to mention on the sign that what was ‘Out Of Order’ was actually the door and not the sauna itself? And may I just say that you didn’t have to follow me in here.”
“Be that as it may, I still fail to see the romantic side of this.”
“Well, it got you out of your pants, didn’t it?”
Caught off guard, Lilly couldn’t help but laugh. And Adam laughed with her. And for a moment their situation didn’t seem so dire.
It was that characteristic of Adam’s that brought her here with him. It was a long time since anyone had been able to disarm her in such a way. And he had a habit of doing it pretty frequently. So, against her better judgment, she agreed to go out with him for a night. As friends.
Then the moment passed, and all the weight of their predicament came crashing onto them. A silence fell over them that seemed to last a disproportional amount of time until Lilly couldn’t stand it anymore. They had already been in the sauna for too long and she could tell that Adam wasn’t doing well in the heat, and she needed to keep him cognitive. She didn’t want him to die. So she made a rash decision. She decided to tell him who she was.
What would it hurt anyways? If he died then her secret would die with him. If he lived and tried to tell someone about her, nobody would believe him anyway. Assuming that he believed her in the first place.
