Terribly scattered thoughts on HBP, which I reserve the right to change my mind about at will. Super rushed Gee, I think there may be spoilers ahead.
You know, I think I really loved that one. So...let's start.
Harry was beautiful and extremely believable. He got over his histrionics, and started getting on with it. I suppose it's a fairly standard genre device - when they stop asking 'why me?' - but I thought that JKR handled it incredibly well. His reactions to Snape and Draco were well done. Etc.
I was almost completely ambivalent about Ron - he annoyed me, but without the passionate hatred. So I suppose that's a positive. Hermione, on the other hand...now, I may well have to rant about this at some stage. I think that JKR's treatment of the female characters is erratic and perplexing, and I don't know whether it can all be explained by the fact that it is from Harry's perspective and he's not always the most observant tack.
I loved OotP Hermione, because she had passion and compassion. In here, she still had book-smarts, but she seemed incredibly soulless. But I want to think over that a bit more.
Um. Draco was believable, etc., but dull. Dumbledore was - well, Dumbledore.
Gah, running out of time. Snape? I know a heap of people are going to jump out saying that he's still good, just sacrificing himself to the cause, etc. I'm more inclined to believe him bad. Which other characters are there? I don't know. Let's assume that it didn't change my opinion fundamentally about any of them. I'm staying far away from Ginny.
Pacing was much better, kept me engaged. I was so impressed with Harry's OWLs! The horcrux idea was...well-crafted, but perhaps my main complaint with the storyline, and therefore that included, is that there's a great deal of convenience.
Damn, I have to go now. Basically, I was really impressed, and am looking forward to the next one. I like Harry as the hero.
