Amazing!

I NEVER thought I'd see the day that Fan-Fiction would be promoted in School Library Journal!  In the August 1st edition there is an article titled 'When Harry Met Bella: Fanfiction is all the Rage. But is it plagiarism? Or the perfect thing to encourage young writers?'

Here are some highlights:

... While fanfiction may seem new, it’s actually old. ( Read more... )

Great article! And that's awesome that it's made it into a library journal. Thanks for sharing it!

You're welcome! I thought it was pretty cool... I'm going to print it out and keep it as a handy reference for some of my colleagues. :)

Yes, make sure you read it when you have time.

While I see what you're saying about the ancient Greeks, I do think that's a little different because as you said it's a 're-telling' of the same myth. They aren't changing it to fill in a gap in the story or to expand on what might have happened afterward, etc. At least as far as I know... I really don't know a lot about the ancient Greek playwrights! :)

It is really neat to see it as such an acceptable type of writing and being encouraged.

That is great we are being mentioned in mainstream media.I much prefer my writing to be something I can talk about to offline friends(which I do) than be seen as a furtive hidden activity.

I actually lost a friend who said my stories were so "disgusting and disgraceful" that her son said i was unfit to mix with! Maybe if we were more widely accepted as a mainstream activity, that would not have happened. And the story was "A Time to Reap" is one I'd happily share with anyone as I would all my work.

You're welcome! I just sort of stumbled across it. I was especially glad to see it in that particular magazine because a couple of my library friends know I write fanfic and I know they think it's strange. :)

I've just now heard of this transformative works. What is the organization?

Oh, thanks! What an interesting site, I'm going to spend some time looking it over. I have the first of Naomi's books but haven't read it yet... so many books, so few hours in the day! :)
