Has anyone on my flist read any of the Robin Hobb books?  Did you enjoy them? Are they good stories?  I've heard about them for years but was looking at them today and was wondering if I would enjoy them.

I really don't know why I NEED a new book, I just bought a whole bunch of books to read and I have books for my book club to read too.  But, I'm ( Read more... )

I've read a fair amount of Hobb. I love the books that have to do with Fitz and the Fool. I read them out of order, the Fool trilogy first and then the other, which starts with Assassin's Apprentice. I'd start with Assassin's Apprentice if I were you.

I waited to reply until after I read one! :) I really enjoyed the Assassin's Apprentice. Great characters and a good story line... it drew me in immediately. One thing that is interesting to me is the way she starts her chapters with the little prologues where she gives you background information that she couldn't give you in any other way. I'm not sure if I've seen that done before... at least not in any recent book.

I'm reading Royal Assassin now and I wasn't able to get it on my Sony Reader for some reason (they don't have every book) and I'm disappointed because I miss being able to enlarge the print!! I really need to get to the eye doctor! :)

Actually, Hobb makes an interesting test case for POV. The Fitz books and the fool ones, are all from Fitz's first person POV, so we get to know him intimately. I tried the Live Ships books and they were in multiple POVs, which I've written in too. But they left me unattached to any of the multiple POV characters.

I read her first trilogy, the farseer trilogy, many years ago. We do have the liveship traders and the tawny man trilogy (2nd trilogy followung the farseer trilogy) here on the shelves, but I haven't gotten around to read them.

Juliet Marrilier is an author that I really like and she is on my blindly to buy list (getting her new books without reading reviews). I absolutely loves her Sevenwaters trilogy.

I finished the first book and am in the middle of the second in the farseer trilogy and I'm enjoying them. I like the characters and the intrigue of the stories. I wrote down Juliet Marrilier on my list of 'to read' authors... thanks for the recommendation!

I'm reading the 2nd one in the Farseer trilogy and I'm enjoying it. It's not Tolkien (*grin*), but it's a nice read.
