"B-b-b-boyfriend? Did you say b-b-b-b-boyfriend?" His mother stammered.
"Yes, mom. We've been together for about a year and he really wants to meet you. I know it's a surprise, but I hope you'll give him a chance." Colby recited. He told her more abruptly than planned, but now was back on script. The stutter surprised him, though. He hadn't heard her stutter since he told her he was going to Afghanistan.
"B-b-b-b-but Colby, what about Susie Wallis, and that nice Jenny girl you b-b-b-brought home from college?"
"Things didn't work out with them, mom. You know that. What matters now is I love Charlie and he loves me. If you give him a chance, I know you'll like him, too. He's a professor," Colby offered. His mom had always wanted him to go back for another degree.
"Colby, honey. You know I only want you to b-b-b-be happy, b-b-b-but you were always so popular in school. What happened? Was it the Army, b-b-b-being around only men? You know I never ....!"
"No mom," He cut in. "It wasn't the Army. I've always been bisexual. But I thought I'd end up with a woman, so I never told you. But, Charlie's good to me. Good FOR me, and this could be for forever. You should meet." Then added, "And give him a chance. I really think you'll like him."
"Of course I'll like him, dear. He's your b-b-b-boyfriend. Your father, on the other hand.... You b-b-b-better talk to him." And suddenly his ears were ringing as she called out loudly.
"B-B-B-Bradley! Colby's on the phone."
"What's happened? Is he okay?" Came the concerned reply. He hadn't missed the stutter.
While waiting for the other shoe to drop, Colby idly wondered why his mom only stuttered on B-words.
