The world stopped and Colby felt his chest tighten. He was suddenly acutely aware how the momentum building over the past year - actually over the past ten years - had been propelling him toward this one moment. Incessantly driving him here. To this moment when the full force of his new reality, with all that momentum behind it, was about to crash headlong into his immutable past.

He steadied himself, taking a deep breath. You can do this, he assured himself. You HAVE to do this. He had been over it in his head again and again, in detail, weighing the pros and cons before ever picking up the phone. The cons had won, but Charlie wanted to meet his family, and Colby would do anything for Charlie. Whether that meant abandoning his own judgment or even shattering the carefully constructed wall that kept line between the past and the present, between that reality and this one.

"Colby, honey, you still there?" The world came rushing back at the sound of his mother's voice.

"Yeah, sorry. Just got distracted for a moment." He replied.

"Really? Can I take that as a 'yes'? You will be bringing someone home with you?" His mom asked - clearly excited by the prospect. Colby could almost hear her mind working, and could picture her smile as she conjured up imagines of a big country wedding, hosting a bridal shower, and spoiling grandchildren.

It all comes down to now, he thought.

"Yes, mom. I will be bringing my ..." But he hesitated. He wasn't sure he could do this, at least not now, not this way. This would break his mother's heart.

"Your fiance?" His mom offered.

He thought of Charlie, steeled himself, and corrected her. "My boyfriend."
