But... does Equilibrium take itself too seriously?
Does it try too hard & come off as a lame attempt at what could have been a cool movie?

I had the same fears as you, especially since they tried to play it up like The Matrix. But ya know, I liked it. It wouldn't be one I'd want to own, but I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

I know a lot of people who really love it, including my own husband. I think it's just okay. I've seen it several times as a result of Jonathan liking it, but I would have been fine to see it once and never again.
