My iron levels are just low right now, so once a week for four weeks I go to the infusion/transfusion center at the local hospital and spend the day getting an intravenous iron supplement. It bruises up my arms a bit by the end of the treatment, but other than that I'm fine.
Do not be scared of hospitals; it's their job to help you. All the nurses that work in the infusion/transfusion center are super nice, and I happen to go to a hospital that serves good food (I'm literally there from 9AM until 4:30PM, so it's a full day. I'll eat breakfast at home before I go, but I eat lunch there, and then go home and make dinner), so it's not that bad. The center also has personal TVs for each person, so you can watch TV, or you can bring a book to read or your iPod to listen to if you want. If you want to take a nap, you can recline your chair and do that too.

I've actually been getting a lot of support from my acquaintances & friends & the faculty here @ CSU. It's been uplifting, to say the least.
