Sending Your Puppy to Fill His Shoes -- For theshield_agent

Eli swallowed as the security guard called someone out to meet him. He told the man he was here from the Lightman Group, and hoped that whomever he was dealing with wasn't yet another person with a long-standing grudge against Cal. Given the regularity with which that happened, it really wasn't too out of line to expect. But, no, this was just ( Read more... )

Phil stepped into the room, suit neat and nondescript, as always. He didn't like having to call on his FBI contacts, but no one at SHIELD could get a read on this HYDRA agent. He'd heard that Lightman could get results. It was the best lead he had to go on. They had to know if HYDRA was planning an attack. They'd gotten previous intel and thousands of lives were at stake if the supposed attack planned for Chicago was carried out.

The man in front of him was younger than he'd expected, but he'd known his share of prodigies. Clint and Natasha at that age were already leagues above anyone older. Hell, Phil was damn good at a young age himself. He was hardly a prodigy, but he could compete with agents a decade ahead of him. It was how he'd risen in the ranks, first at the FBI and then at SHIELD.

"Cal Lightman? Agent Phil Coulson." He offered his hand.

Eli smiled, self-conscious, awkward, winced a little bit as he took Phil's hand. No, of course Cal hadn't actually told anyone that he wasn't coming, because then it wouldn't be Eli dealing with the inevitable fallout. He took a breath, and tried to make that smile a little bit brighter. On the upside, Phil didn't seem like he had a personal issue with Cal.

"Actually, I'm Eli Loker. I work with the Lightman Group. Cal couldn't make it, so he sent me to do the preliminary work. It, uh, nice to meet you."

Really, there had to be something wrong with him that he still let Cal push him into these situations. Eli actually was something of a prodigy, even if Cal did his absolute best to make sure that Eli was utterly unaware of the fact. He wasn't a natural, not like Torres, but he was very good at what he did. Which was the actual reason Cal sent him on this, even if he always made it seem like he was just trying to push Eli harder to find what was too much.
