Commentary: Gay is not the new blackInteresting, if not completely offensive and racist commentary. I'm sorry, but I'm getting a little tired of the black community feeling like they're the victims in the race for gay equality. I'm glad that black people are so very proud to be black while stomping on the gay community, who are only asking for ( Read more... )

"senior writer and columnist for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com"

I think this says pretty much all that needs to be said. Outside of self-identified conservative organizations, professional sports of all sorts are a hotbed of homophobia.

The fact is, racism, antisemitism, and homophobia are all part of a fairly ridiculous tribalism that people will go to great lengths to justify, because they can't admit to themselves that they might be doing something irrational. Or, worse, that a feeling "from the gut" might be wrong, because that would imply their moral compass needs to be calibrated.

To add, the insistence that civil rights are somehow a zero-sum game is a -conservative- line. It was used against the blacks in the 40s, 50s and 60s, and now major figures of their "tribe" are using it against us, without a single touch of irony.

That is the irony of it. They're acting exactly like the anti-black conservatives in the early to mid 20th century, yet they can't see the parallels. I'm just tired of the hypocrisy, and I'm tired of the people who hold the power against a group acting like they're the victims in all of this (just like the christians).

I'm not saying that the "black gays" that he mentioned don't actually exist. I'm quite sure that this is a group of black gay people who believe exactly as this guy says.

I'm just saying that his view that gay community is "blacks" and "everyone else" is absurd, and if that view does exist as virulently as he claims, then it's both extremely counterproductive and is working to hold back the gay rights movement as a whole so they can hold onto what bits of the oppression spotlight they can.

Generally I don't take offense to things you say. You and I both feel strongly about things politically, and there's no reason to take anything personally.

What I am saying is that the black community needs to get off their high horse and stop acting like they're the only ones who deserve attention. Whenever discussions turn toward another minority, it seems as though the black community is right there trying to make themselves relevant or to get the spotlight back on them.

My primary argument is exactly what you're saying. There needs to be an end to the segregation and there needs to be a unity of ideas and action. If the commentary is to be believed, then yes, the black community needs to sit down and shut up about how they're being victimized yet again, and actually look introspectively at why people are turning against them ( ... )

I agree with you. This is why I don't like getting into politics... it just upsets me.
