OBSCURITY Chapter 3:
Yamada opened his eyes and stared at his ceiling, the blankness and the dullness of it bringing a sad smile to his lips. He slowly got up and winced as a piercing pain came from his left shoulder. He stifled a groan then continued on getting up. He has to or else he wouldn’t be able to go to school. Hurrying his movements as silent as possible, Yamada picked his school bag and shoved his new glasses on as he stepped out of the door. He breathed out a sigh of relief then headed out completely.
People before asks him why he was so intelligent. He would answer them that he was simply reading in advance. It was the truth, when he was in junior high, while his mother was still alive, Yamada was an average student. He excels but not that much. When his mother died, that’s when he started reading in advance and when he doesn’t have anything to read in advance anymore, he would read other books in the library. The place where he felt safe and protected. Not just the library, school was his security, his only hope and way to survive. Then that was the start his knowledge broadened, he started excelling and was grateful he did so because he was able to continue studying.
Yamada had his legs folded under him with a book on his laps. He had gotten early to school and without anything to do since he finished reading all of his books already, he went to the school library and picked a book to read.
****
“This place is really amazing” Yamada said as he looked around the great library of the Yabu’s. He looked up to the books at the top shelves that even as tall as Yabu, needed to climb stairs to reach it.
“Well, it’s here to be a display” Yabu shrugged “No one in our family really reads. Except my mother” he said
“Do you have a brother?” Yamada asked then as he returned his attention to Yabu who was simply doodling on the activity book, instead of answering
“I have two older brothers and an older sister” Yabu replied “They are all pain in my ass” he grumbled, resting his head on the arm he propped on the table
“That’s nice” Yamada sighed “I’m an only child so I always get jealous when I see siblings playing with each other” he said
“Ah, maybe that’s the reason you’re a genius. You don’t play, you always study” Yabu pointed out
“Maybe” Yamada smiled bitterly and pulled the book Yabu was answering “You have to learn at least something” he sighed “Try answering them not drawing on them” he said and pushed the book back to Yabu
There wasn’t actually wrong with Yamada. The boy was silent but talkative too when a talk was started. Stubborn as well and at times, playful. He was normal, Yamada was, just had fully utilized the 3% functioning of his brain.
Yabu stared at Yamada, taking note of the boy’s features. Feminine. Yamada looks feminine, at any angle. Tapping his pen on the book he was supposedly answering, Yabu stared more at Yamada, raking his eyes on the boy’s skin but then he stopped just where Yamada’s collar is. He blinked and stared more. There was something on the boy’s skin, a birthmark? Realizing then what he was doing, Yabu shook his self and returned his attention back to the real problems he should be facing. Why the hell would he even look at Yamada other than seeing him as annoying?
“This is so annoying” Yabu grumbled and pushed the book away from him. He then stood up and walked towards the window, looking at the garden then smiled as he turned to Yamada. “It looks cool outside, let’s bring those stuffs near the pond” he invited
“You have a pond?” Yamada squeaked as he tails after Yabu who had suggested earlier for them to go outside. The weather was beautiful and it would be great to study outside, and hearing about the existence of a pond, Yamada instantly thought of swans or ducks. That would be more than beautiful. “This is very beautiful!” he exclaimed as they reached the pond Yabu mentioned. He hurried towards the bridge leading to the shed resting just at the center of the pond and placed the books he was holding on the table, before he went by the rails and looked at the rippling water of the pond. He then scanned the area and spotted three swans swimming near the shades of the trees lined at the bank of the pond. “Swans” he breathed out
Sitting there, with the solemn atmosphere and all, Yabu watched every time Yamada would lift his head on a sound of rippling since the swans they own would be swimming close by, and watch the white beauties with delight. His mother loved those swans too when she was alive, their family used to stay in this shade and Yabu missed those days but it’s impossible to bring that back now. He tapped the pen on the table and looked at the swans as well.
“Are you okay?” Yamada suddenly asked, catching Yabu off guard. Yabu dashed the back of his hand on his cheek, wiping the stubborn tear he shed.
“Mind your own business” Yabu grumbled and tossed his pen down the table
“I was just asking in concern” Yamada said and looked down, sighing as he reached for Yabu’s book to check on the answers.
“My~” Yabu started then decided that since he showed something he never shows to anyone even to his family, he thought that it wouldn’t be that awful to reveal some to Yamada “My mother loves this place” he said “I do too but it had been dead since she died” he shrugged “She owns those swans” he pointed out
“I’m sorry” Yamada said then and continued on checking on Yabu’s answers
“How about you? Where’s your mother?” Yabu asked
“She’s dead too” Yamada replied simply “She died in an accident” he added
“Oh” Yabu blinked “My mother died with illness. No one wants her to go but my father told me we have to let her rest, so we did” he sighed
“You love her” Yamada said then
“All kids love their mothers” Yabu snorted and was waiting for Yamada’s agreement but when the boy simply smiled at him, that made him frown. “Why? You don’t love your mother?” he asked
“I love her” Yamada replied and smiled thinly “You have to get at least one correct answer. You should exert effort so you could get rid of me sooner” he nodded down and pushed the book back to Yabu.
Yabu frowned at the sudden change of subject but he doesn’t want to pry more. He doesn’t care about Yamada, why would he pry about his mother? If the kid has some problems with his family then he doesn’t have any business to do with it. He’s not the type of person to butt in other’s business.

“Yamada-kun would not join us for today and would be in the infirmary for a while” their homeroom teacher announced.
Yabu frowned as he lifted his head and looked at the woman in front of their classroom. He rested his head on his hand and listened to the reason why Yamada would be staying in the infirmary. Sick? As he understood what the details told him. That was why as soon as the school bell rang, Yabu went out of their classroom and headed to the infirmary. He didn’t bother knocking anymore and had simply entered there, spotting then the bed that Yamada occupies.
“Wait” the first year exclaimed after seeing Yabu, pulling then the curtain to hide Yamada. “Do you need something?” he asked
“What’s wrong with him?” Yabu asked and started walking towards the curtained side
“Yabu-senpai” the first year said “Yamachan needed rest and disturbance wouldn’t help him recover” he explained
“I’m not disturbing him” Yabu frowned “I’m visiting him” he gritted to the boy
“Yuto” Yamada croaked then and that made the two of them turn to the curtains “It’s okay” he said, his voice hoarse and rough.
“But Yamachan” Yuto started
“It’s really okay” Yamada insisted “It’s not that he’s going make anything worse” he added and gave a rough cough that made Yabu wince
“Should you be talking? You sound horrible” Yabu commented but wasn’t answered “I heard you’re sick from sensei” he said unnecessarily then
“Not that sick” Yamada replied and the shuffling told Yabu that the boy was getting up.
“You don’t have to sit for my sake” Yabu snapped “I’m about to go too. I don’t want to catch whatever you have by staying long” he said then and headed to the door “You have to be well for Sunday or else I’ll tell my father you’re not competent enough to be my tutor” he grumbled and left not caring if Yamada had something to say or what.
---------------
Yamada fisted the blanket and lifted his head as he heard the curtains pulled aside. Yuto stood there and he tried to smile but the wound on his lips stopped him. He winced and watched as his friend sighed heavily and turned to the basin, drying then the towel before pampering him by damping the clotted blood on his wound, to let him open his mouth to eat at least.
“You shouldn’t let everyone bully you like this” Yuto said, his eyes getting watery as he moved from Yamada’s lips to the blackening bruise on Yamada’s jaw. “You can leave your house, I would gladly help you. You can stay in my place” he offered
“No” Yamada shook his head and tried smiling again “He would hurt you too” he said
“I don’t care” Yuto said “He’s very abusive and why don’t you ever try reporting him! He’s violent and whatever he’s doing to you is very inhuman. He’s your father!” he exclaimed
“And he’s my only family” Yamada said and that stopped Yuto from exclaiming another thing “He’s the only one I got” he nodded down
“I’m always here to help you” Yuto sighed then “Whenever you needed it” he said
“Thank you” Yamada smiled again and touched Yuto’s hand. “You’re very kind” he nodded down
---------------
Hating his self for being such an ass, Yabu scratched his head as he made his way to the infirmary again. He wanted to apologize somehow and knowing that the annoying first year wouldn’t be there to block him, Yabu entered the infirmary without knocking. He looked around and confirmed that there was no one else there. He approached the curtained side and went into it, looking down to the bed that Yamada occupies. It was weird even that he’s at school when he could have rested at home. Yamada was asleep, his head turned to his right that he faces the window, his hair stumbling and covering his face. Sighing, Yabu sat on the stool next to the bed and reached out to side Yamada’s hair. His hand then froze at the midst of his task as he saw a cut on the boy’s upper lip. He stared at it for a moment then when Yamada groaned and turned his head this time to left, Yabu felt his breath stopping. There was a huge bruise on the boy’s cheek that it even reaches the boy’s ear. Gingerly touching it, Yabu’s eyes spotted the blackish thing on the boy’s neck, the one he thought as the birthmark and confirmed that it was a bruise as well. He cursed and then didn’t stop his self as he lifted the blanket covering the boy. He took Yamada’s arm and rolled the sleeve of his shirt, showing him bruises fresh and old. But then even before he could pry further, Yamada suddenly jerked his arm away.
“What are you doing?” Yamada gasped
