Part Two
Those bells were mocking him now. They were cruel laughter in his ears. Why, oh why had he ever thought that he was going to get a happily ever after?
I need to go tell everyone that she stood me up. The realization crashed down over him and was so heavy that it forced him to sink down into chair.
“Anthony, would you like me to tell everyone, that there will not be a wedding taking place today?” The minister had a look of pity on his face. Anthony’s throat seized up, so that all he could do was nod his head. He put his head into his hands and felt sobs just begin to shake his body.
Soon there was someone standing him up and holding him. At first he thought that it was his mom, but then he realized that it was Ian. Ian who had been his rock when he was nervous and who was his rock again now that he could barely stand.
“Come on, Ant, there is nothing here for you to stay for.”
Even though these words were supposed to be comforting, they were anything but. Nothing, nothing for Anthony here. He started to sob even more. The world went blurry and he was in Ian’s car being driven home. Sometime during the car ride his tears stopped, but there was still a dull ache where his heart should be.
They crossed over the threshold into their shared house that wasn’t supposed to be shared anymore. It was going to be completely Ian’s and Anthony and Kalel were going to live together. Most of Anthony’s stuff wasn’t even here. He felt like a complete stranger in a place that he had lived so much of his life in.
“Ant? Do you want to talk to me about it?”
“She stood me up. She left a note saying that she couldn’t marry me.”
The words caught in Anthony’s throat and before he knew it he was crying again.
“Ian, why did she leave me?”
The sounds were pitiful. Ian went over and took his best friend into his arms again.
“Shhhh, Anthony. It is going to be okay. Shhh.”
Ian was rubbing Anthony’s back in circles as if he was comforting his own son rather than his bet friend. After a moment caught outside of time, Anthony pulled away.
“I think I am going to get out of this tux, and take a shower.”
“Okay, want me to order a pizza for us?”
“Yeah, thanks Ian.”
Anthony went and walked into the shower. He turned it up as hot as it would go and just stood under the water and let it flow over his body. He let it wash everything that had happened today. He lost track of time.
By the time he turned off the water, it had been running cold for several minutes. He grabbed a towel off the rack and walked to his room. He only had old clothes here. He pulled out some old sweat pants and pulled them on. He thought about looking for a shirt, but he simply didn’t care. It was easier because caring meant feeling and feeling meant feeling like shit.
I walked out of his old, his current room and down the hallway to their living room. There was a pizza box on the coffee table, but that is not what caught his eye. Ian had fallen asleep on the couch with the TV on. His mouth was slack but he looked at peace. It hit Anthony. He didn’t want to be alone tonight.
He walked over to the couch and laid down next to Ian and began to drift off into a dreamless sleep. Before he was completely gone he felt Ian’s arm wrap around his waist.
