Summary: Can Jonghyun and Minho survive working on the Lee's Family Estate when they become targets of the two sons?
Author Notes: I'm taking a small hiatus from writing Before the Dawn just so I can refresh myself to continue the story because I feel like my writing is starting to get worn out and doesn't have the same crispness as the previous chapters.
“Hyung…hyung...you have to wake up. We’re going to be late on our first day…” A voice in the distance kept pestering Jonghyun as he groaned and turned over to curl around his pillow. He yelped as two hands tugged him from the top bunk of the bunk bed and deposited him on the floor in a tangle of sheets and limbs. The shorter male grumbled and stood up, hair mussed from sleeping as he let Minho lead him off towards the bathroom. Minho was already fully dressed and ready to go but he always woke up before Jonghyun on important days like this. They had finally been hired to work with the Lee family’s famous horses and here Jonghyun was, partying late into the night and trying to sleep off his hangover. Minho smirked softly and knew it was going to be hell during the car ride out into the country to the giant manor where the family lived.
Jonghyun walked out of the bathroom, looking very awake and alert as he picked up the clothes Minho had set out for him to wear and tugged them on. The taller male held out a cup of coffee that Jonghyun took gratefully, sipping down the dark liquid and heading into the kitchen to grab the other piece of toast, speeding around the apartment as he looked for this or that. Minho shook his head and grabbed the car keys, heading to the door and waited for his hyung to finish his search and tug on his work boots. “Let’s go Tree.” Jonghyun patted Minho’s side as he opened the door and headed for the stairs, glad that they only lived on the second floor and didn’t have to make a habit out of using the elevator. Minho rolled his eyes at the nickname, one of many, and followed Jonghyun out of the apartment, making sure to lock up and head after the shorter male. It was hard to keep the slight smirk from his lips as he watched how animated and happy his hyung was now that they had a job. It’d been hard going the past month when they both had gotten fired from their jobs and had to struggle to make ends meet with the odd jobs they could find here and there.
The drive to the estate didn’t take half as long as Minho would have expected but that was because the speed demon Jonghyun was behind the wheel. There were only certain times in Minho’s life that he could say he was truly afraid and being in the car with Jonghyun driving was one of them. It seemed that he had to do everything possible while he was driving which meant that his eyes were on everything but the road yet he still managed to avoid any and every accident that could possibly occur. Jonghyun slowed down, thankfully, when they started to approach the grounds and held out his and Minho’s pass to the security guard who stopped them at the gate. They had expected this since it was the Lee family they were talking about. The husband was the owner of one of the biggest horse race tracks and sponsored at least two horse shows every year. The wife was quite happy to be married to a man who brought in so much wealth that all she had to do was spread her legs and pop out two sons. An easy life indeed.
Jonghyun bowed his head to the guard as he accepted the IDs they would use to get on the estate from now on. They both let out a soft gasp as they looked from the giant mansion to the fountain in front of it. The stables were located at the back of the house a few miles back. Most of the estate grounds were turned into something to be used for the horses, from the small race track to just about anything else that could have possibly been built. There was a small place for employees who came on and off the estate to park and a man was waiting for them there, a clipboard in his hand and a pen poised and ready. Jonghyun and Minho exchanged glances as they got out and gave a soft smile to the man, bowing their heads and walking forward.
“You must be Choi Jonghyun and Kim Minho yes?” Minho frowned softly as Jonghyun covered his mouth and faked a cough to keep from dying of laughter. “Kim Jonghyun and Choi Minho.” The man frowned and made the corrections on his paper before pointing towards the house. “Master Lee would like to speak with you before you are given your duties. Follow me.” The man turned on his heels and headed towards the mansion, Minho chuckling quietly as Jonghyun mimicked the man’s strut. A pair of bright eyes watched the two of them head towards the large oak doors before shaking his head and turning to focus on his elder brother. The tall youth gave a soft sigh and walked over to lay on the small couch, the other Lee son looking up to regard his younger brother quietly. “What is it Taemin?” Jinki asked quietly, knowing that his brother would continue to huff and puff until he is given the attention he wanted.
“The new stable hands have arrived and I can see they’re already going to be useless. There’s a short one who looks like a complete idiot and the other one is so tall I’m surprised they ever know each other.” Taemin pouted more as he looked over towards Jinki, who knew the pout was nothing more than an act. Taemin was a mischievous boy who was behind the demise of every stable hand who had gotten fired within the last few months. Their father would believe anything his youngest son spouted but Jinki knew the truth though he never spoke out against his brother. He had more important things than getting involved in Taemin’s fun. He had a fiancée after all and he wasn’t looking forward to this arranged marriage in the least. “Leave them be Taemin. It’s getting harder for father to find good help these days from the horror stories the one’s you got fired tell.” Taemin frowned as he was reprimanded and shot up off of the couch, skipping towards the door. “Well I’m going to go get a closer look at them.”
Jinki sighed as he watched the blonde headed boy leave the room and stood up slowly, pulling his shoes back on. He was curious of the two new employees himself and figured it’d be best to see them now rather than later. Besides he was sure that they couldn’t be as bad as Taemin tried to make them sound. They were on the third floor and looking down anyone could seem like an idiot. Right?

Jonghyun and Minho looked around at high ceilings and expensive paintings that decorated the inside of the mansion. They followed their guide up to the second floor and into the large office of Master Lee. The man was a head shorter than Minho with broad shoulders and a face that had permanent laugh lines carved into his face. The man stood and walked over as he dismissed their guide with a flick of his wrist. “Welcome, welcome and thank you for applying for the job. We’ve been through our share of stable hands but you two look more than capable to pick up the slack and get the ball rolling again. All the paper work has been taken care of so I won’t keep you any longer than needed. Our head stable hand will meet you down there and tell you your daily duties.” Jonghyun glanced over at Minho before giving a soft smile and nodding his head. “Thank you sir for hiring us. We’ll do a great job.” Minho nodded and they shook hands once more before they were dismissed to go down to the barn. Minho saw the two males standing towards the end of the hall, in a heated discussion about something before Jonghyun did but neither of them did anything besides bow their heads and continue onwards. They both knew the Lee brothers by sight and name and weren’t going to interact with them unless needed. They did just get the job after all.
The head stable hand was a nice old man who looked like he would kick the bucket any day now. Most of the morning duties had already been done which left them with time to get familiar with the horses and the procedures they would do every morning and afternoon. Most of the horses were in the front part of the stables and gave out soft whinnies when Jonghyun and Minho walked through. It seemed the horses had all been waiting for new stable hands to get to know or something of the sort. The head stable hand gave each boy a pat on the shoulder and said he’d be back after lunch to walk them through the afternoon duties to make sure they got it right. Minho seemed more attentative than Jonghyun who seemed to have found a friend in one of the mares.
“Ah that one’s name is Rubina. She’s Rebel’s mate. We keep them separated whenever the racing season is going to start. Don’t want Rebel thinking of just his mate and all.” The old man laughed softly as Jonghyun held out a melting peppermint to the horse. She took it happily and nudged her head against Jonghyun’s chest, letting out a gentle sigh of appreciation. Jonghyun beamed happily and Minho couldn’t help but get infected from the smile himself, finding it hard to keep a straight face when his hyung was in puppy mode.
The crunch of two pairs of boots grabbed the men’s attention as they turned and looked over the two figures who entered the barn. The old man ripped off his hat and gave a small bow, normally cheerful voice filling with respect and slight fear. “Master Jinki. Young master Taemin.” The elder of the pair inclined his head while the other wrinkled his nose up at the “Young” added to his title. Minho’s dark eyes could easily see that the younger of the two famous Lee brothers would no doubt give them a lot of trouble while the elder didn’t seem to mind them in the least. Jonghyun wiped his hands free and walked over to stand next to Minho, scratching the back of his neck a bit and giving a small bow, nudging Minho’s side to do the same.
“So you’re the two new stable boys.” The blonde headed boy gave a wicked smile and seemed to flutter forward as he looked Minho up and down once before placing them on Jonghyun. “You. You’ll do for now. Come.” Jonghyun bristled visibly with the order but knew better than to voice his opinions over this, following the youngest brother towards a special part of the barn dedicated to Jinki’s and Taemin’s house. Jinki watched his brother walk off and waited for him to be out of ear shot before giving a soft sigh and shaking his head. “I apologize for Taemin. He doesn’t understand the fact that not everyone is his play toy. Thos he seemed to have chosen your friend I will have to ask you then, sir, to be Etoile’s caretaker. Minho raised his eyebrows and looked at the other stable hand who simply shrugged and left the barn. Jinki gave a soft smile and cleared his throat. “Sorry. The two stable hands we lost before were our horses’ personal caretakers so we’ll have to ask you to take up their places. I hope it won’t be too much trouble and your salaries will be adjusted to match such a position.”
Minho gave a small nod and glanced over his shoulder to look over to where Jonghyun had disappeared with Taemin. He could only hope that his hyung would survive the day without him but he was sure Jonghyun could handle whatever that kid could throw at him. Besides he had to deal with what was in front of him at the moment.
