I'm hard on equipment -- my backpack's patched all over the place with duct tape -- but I think it's worth buying the best gear you can afford for some things -- raingear, boots, sleeping bags, tents, packs... the big performance-critical pieces of kit that you'll probably have and use for years and years if you treat it right.
That said, my current hiking boots are a pair I got from Big 5's clearance table for $20. But they're surprisingly good for that. A lot of my jackets and other clothing came from the REI garage or Second Ascent (For now. I just bought a pricey new soft shell because it was on clearance and has pit zips for ventilation, which is rare in the type, and the North Face one from the REI garage sale that I had been using is a sauna. Time to sell it on craigslist..)
Cheap or used gear stuff perfectly well for a lot of things, yup.
