You're right in that parents should lead by example, and know when to say no to their kids but...
- kids want sweets, and are going to ask for them no matter what. That suggests to me that you're saying that banning these adverts would have no effect, which just isn't true. If they had no effect, then the product's companies wouldn't bother making them. I forget the exact rules, but there's regulation in Scandinavia already that strictly limits what may be advertised during children's TV shows since, I assume, they reckon manipulating children as a target market isn't a very healthy thing to do
( ... )
I think that the problem with commericals as a whole would go down if people would quit using the TeeVee as their babysitter, which I am willing to stab a guess that most of those complaining are those that use it as such. Personally, I do not watch television, and my children will also be limited in that respect (whenever I do have them). If it's daylight hours and the homework is done, then they can go and play outside :D
Ah, but here becomes the problem with that. You have the parents of Nixzmary Brown and other child-abusers, and you HAVE to protect the child from the parents. You have your double edged sword. How do you save those kids unless you throw in the strict parenting laws to prevent shit like that from happenening.
Going on that one tangent, killers/abusers of kids, Death Penalty. I cannot argue my for/against Death Penalty stance, because I dont know exactly where I stand, HOWEVER, in those cases, fuck yeah, the chair, the injection, firing squad, whatever the case may be.
I do see a point in the "you have to have SOME restriction on what gets advertised to children," but come on. I think miss_yt is right when she says parents need to teach their children to weed things out... because as adults we're constantly bombarded by ads and most of them sink in (think beauty items for women - anti-wrinkle cream, anyone? makeup?, etc).
As for spanking - my parents never actually spanked me (I listened to the warnings), but my bro got a swat on the ass once. My dad didn't spank.... he pinched. And believe me, one of those was all it took. :)
I sooo agree. Parents are just looking for somewhere to place the blame because they won't admit it's their own fault they let their kids consume all that crap.
