You really should read "The Game: Infiltrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists" by Neil Strauss. It's an absolutely engrossing read, and he talks all about "peacocking," or dressing way over-the-top to attract attention. ;)

Tossed on my desktop doodlenote; I'll add it to my amazon wishlist next time I update it (probably once we're moved into our house... whenever that'll be).

An interesting take, to be sure. I found myself wondering where Dr. Prescot gets the idea that, "By comparison, humanity's efforts to tackle global poverty and climate change have frequently been insincere, mean-spirited and feeble."

I don't disagree necessarily, but I wonder where the value judgment comes from. It seems to me that there are numerous sincere and caring efforts out there, I wonder what drove that statement?

Well, it was an editorial, so he was entitled to his opinion on things. Perhaps in the groups he sees about most in his direct environment (perhaps on television, real-life friends, people in the street, etc), it seems that people AREN'T making the effort.

And do keep in mind, my sweet, that you recently left one of the most green-conscious states in the Union over there ;) At least, that is always how it struck me during my year in CA <3

Of course he is entitled to his opinions, I was just interested in what lead him to it. And yes, California is pretty "green", though I think I saw a lot of what he was complaining about even there. I'd like to know what lead him to that conclusion because that may be a really good place to start combating the problem. If people are well meaning but throwing their resources down a hole, fixing that could really make a difference.
