Spiritual 101 Quote - Positive & Negative

Feb 12, 2007 13:46

Interesting quote:

A lot of people say that the world is very negative, but that’s not exactly true. Look around you. EVERYTHING exists simultaneously in this universe, the positive as well as negativity. There is poverty, there is wealth, there is sickness, there is health, there is love, and there is hatred and fear, and there is happiness and ( Read more... )

that is interesting -- and provocative. while i agree that there is both positive and negative in the world, i don't know that i would support the argument that they are always in equal parts. for instance, in the quote she says, "there is poverty, there is wealth..." i would agree with this, but also suggest that there is way more poverty than wealth. or that its distribution is extremely polar, which is not necessarily a generally good state of affairs. this might be because i'm thinking on a more individual than global or comprehensive level... discuss. ;)

I heard once that being poor is a state of mind, that it all depends on how that person looks at his/her state of being. Granted, I can only take this so far...because we're eating fatty hamburgers and kids in Uganda, Africa struggle to get one meal a day. But what if those kids in Uganda feel rich in their lives, their families, etc. Not just materialistically.

Also, there sits the wealthy man, with a ton of material possession...some would call him wealthy, but he's poor in spirit because he's a jerk or something and people don't like him. And he's lonely. I'm not saying all wealthy and poor people act this way...but if I really believe in the power of your mind/spirit. If you believe you're poor...then you are. If you believe you're wealthy in love and family...then you are. :)

all very good points. i think, also, about the children/people who *do* struggle to get only one meal a day, and about maslow's hierarchy of needs. if they are hungry (i mean really hungry, not "i-haven't-eaten-anything-for-four-hours" hungry), how rich could they feel in love and family? how could they concentrate on *anything* else? do they need those essential requirements of physical nourishment to be met before truly experiencing those higher-level things?

i think feeling rich in love and family might be something that is *totally* attainable with low-income or lower-income people, but i wonder about the attainability of even the *sense* of richness (in something like love and family) when it comes to the *truly* poor.

Agreed. This is where I draw the line too. Watching a documentary with the Uganda kids...they were starving, depressed...looked like walking dead basically. But as soon as they got a school built and a better hospital, food, etc. (aka American recognition) they bloomed. Appreciate the little things. Feel richer than most of the middle-class Americans do because they know what it's like to go without. When that is filled...well, it's like using a toilet for the first time when you've been out at girls camp for 2 weeks. lol

OMG, I'm the biggest idiot on earth. My stomach nearly hit the floor.

1. Your journal is very...colorful...therefore, making me believe that you're a chic.

2. I didn't pay attention to the name order underneath your userinfo photo.

3. You can change your mind about "friending" me...I'll let it go because I'm such a moron and probably have offended you.

4. I'll go smack my head into the brick wall by my desk.

Yeah...it all hit me when I read the superbowl elevator convo.
