summary: woohyun tries to repent
Woohyun stumbles down the hall, his earthy robe dragging and catching with each stride. The dense gloom of the situation fogs the emotion thickened chamber. A tightness blooms in his chest as his Father's commands ring silently between his ears. Shadowing beside the door, dongwoo stands. He’s quickly wiping his eyes with dark dampened sleeves. Even with his hood pulled over his face, Woohyun sees it all. His flushed complexion, a pair of plush, quivering lips.
He's crying.
He's always crying.
The crackle of the scorching torch clicks in the hallway. Dongwoo rolls beads between his fingers, silent prayers in regards of sunggyu. A painful smile forces on Woohyuns lips as the distance between them comes to a close. He doesn't look up. Hushed coughs and sniffles echo softly off the damp stones as his pace hastens. Woohyun wants to cry. He wants to scream. He wants to burst through the door and push the priest away. Repent for all he’s done wrong, scream all his hail mary’s and hope the Lord hears his pleas and spares his life- but he knows how foolish that is. So he keeps his stature, faith fading as his heart sinks deeper. Behind the aged door, Howon's voice through seeps through the cracks.
"Almighty Father," his usually cheerful voice low with remorse, " hear our prayers."
Woohyun feels a pang in his chest as his eyes begin to sting and his arms suddenly weaken. Pages flutter and scatter as the bible slip from his grasp, booming in his ears as the book thumps on the floor.
"Your son Sunggyu whom you called from this life to yourself." he holds his voice strong, "grant him light, happiness-" woohyun let's out a soft gasp, trying to breathe around the lump forming in his throat as dongwoo's hushed sobs resound through the corridor.
"...Let him pass in safety through the gates of death..." howon's voice falters slightly. Tears hot on his cheeks, the words start panning out as Woohyun falls into his thoughts, his lips mechanically mouthing the prayer as they have all these years. Over the span of many years, he's witnessed many people pass.
Yet, he can't recall a time where it hurt this much.
