funnily enough, this entry filled me with such a profound sense of loss at not having ever done the stuff you're talking about, that i'm now crying uncontrollably. effective writing, i suppose...
How very complimentary... but don't cry!! Don't cry, you will do it, and it will be glorious. Maybe you will go to Cornwall and wait outside the recording studio of a certain someone... ;)
Such an apt description, I felt it in my bones. "Left to cope..." I wonder if, when this is a common occurrence, children get used to it and it makes them a little different than their peers in some fundamental way when they grow up?
You should definitely go as an adult if you get the chance!! I have trouble even imagining London through a kid's eyes, except maybe that it would be scarier and more magical (but what wouldn't?). I felt like everyone was so grown up around me. Very few children, except at parks, now that I think back -- unless they were young enough for their mums to be pushing them around. ;) Musta been a singular experience! It's certainly nice when you're old and boring enough to get around by yourself and appreciate the history.
