Let's get to it.
JACON came about when friends I had met back at Otakon 2006 asked if I would be interested in coming down for a visit and a con since we hadn't seen each other in three years. I agreed and Thursday found me on an early, early flight. (This was three days after I arrived home from ACEN+week in Chicago).
After dropping stuff off at
hikarisasashi and her husband's apartment, we, along with
davennashi spent the rest of Thursday milling about Epcot. I've never been to any of the Disney parks before and it was actually pretty cool. It was cloudy but I had a great time seeing all the different countries. We went full circle and I took some pictures, mostly buildings or details in the architecture I found nifty. (see photos
here) When we got to Japan, we stopped for food and drifted around the various shops. Lots of really neat stuff but of course, it's all really expensive. While we were eating, we could hear taiko drumming, but couldn't see it. The koi pond had
fish as long as my forearm in it, I've never seem them that big. After completing the circuit, we stopped back in Canada so I could pick up a CD by the band that was playing there (Off Kilter, rock music with bagpipes mixed it. Here's their
site, be warned-there's music). The rest of the evening was spent scouting some last-minute items for John's last-minute cosplay.
davennashi,
hikarisasashi and John all did Soul Eater cosplay on Friday, I opted to play photographer for them. (Daven was Soul (2nd outfit), Hikari was Maka and John was Maka's father, Spirit.)
When we first arrived, a really bad Light cosplayer stopped us and asked if
hikarisasashi was cosplaying a Slytherin student. He didn't seem too dismased that he was incorrect.
JACON was a tiny con, which was kind of nice actually (and this was the last year it was running too). Everyone just seemed a bit more easy-going. The weather was unfriendly though, rained a lot. After picking up badges we hung around until the Dealer's Room opened.
davennashi got some Soul Eater items and I surprisingly enough, found some Guilty Gear gashapon for
ashercroix. In the back corner of the room was a roped off area for people who wanted to engage in some LARP combat.
After aquiring our goods, we decided to see what the "Cosplay on a Dime" panel was all about. The really bad Light cosplayer from before? He was running it and to be truthful, he didn't have a clue. He pulled
hikarisasashi up and asked her about her costume (something she and
davennashi had thrown together last minute) and then prattled on with bad advice interspersed with encouragement to do things as cheaply as possible. "It's okay to skimp on details!" was one of his more elaborated points. In between facepalming and texting it gave me a few good chuckles.
The LARP fighting had me curious, so after the panel we headed back to give it a whirl.
hikarisasashi agreed to be my sparing partner and we had a good time, went all five rounds. It's nothing like the swordfighting I used to do with friends in high school though. (But then again, we weren't swinging foamed bats around. Our weapons of choice were either real blades or whatever we could hammer out of the scrap metal we found. Shields were often bits of wood or sections of old fences nailed together and armor was whatever we could layer up with- a quilted jerkin someone had made from old shirts, a bit of coppery scale mail attached to an old leather trench coat that had been cut up or in the case of one or two helms, crafted out of sheet metal. Totally ghetto, but totally fun.)
Then it was off for food and followed by a quick stop at Jo-Ann Fabrics to get more pink fleece for John's Saturday costume. We took some photos around their apartment complex and spent the rest of the evening sewing the pink fleece while watching anime.
Saturday's cosplays were Galaxy Angel-
davennashi as Ranpha,
hikarisasahi as Milfeulle and John as Normad (super-plush sized). We went to a panel of making and publishing webcomics first (John trying to sneak in after he parked the car, but one can't be very surreptitious when one is a 6ft tall pink thing XD) Then it was more wandering in the Dealer's Room (I picked up two CDs) but the screen mesh in one of John's eyes fell out (thus creating a way for us to feed him pocky). Lunch and repairs were next but as we were leaving, a pair of crazy furries accosted
davennashi and I did little more than complain about how they had been reprimanded on
fursuit for being OT. o_O Anywho...
Back at the apartment, we enjoyed more food and anime while John patched his eye and
davennashi finished sewing her Lion!Soul head. A quick photoshoot was held once we were back at the convention and then
davennashi switched costumes. Following that, we ended up at the Stan Bush concert, it was alright. During the encore, John put Normad on and ran/waddled up to the crowd before the stage; quite possibly one of the funniest things I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing.
Sunday was uneventful, I was flying home and then running across state to visit my older brother. Onto the pictures!
Photos I took can be seen

davennashi took can be seen

davennashi as Soul,
hikarisasahi as Maka. Cool water effects provided by the fountain in the pond behind their apartment building.
