The village just lost power for about 30 seconds. Wtf?
So much for me never investing in an UPS because of my perceptions of the reliability of power on campus. I think that if I switch to using a desktop full time (which I've been thinking about), I'll have to invest in an UPS.

For most of fall semester, my section of Pom was subject to 1-2 second outages.... for a while, it seemed like once a week. Which sucked hardcore when I was working on something (read: hadn't saved my Sims game).
Luckily, I don't think I had anything important open on the desktop when that happened... oh wait, I lied, the notes for my paper that I didn't save. Doh!
It would also be handy at 'home,' now that I think about it... the electrics in my mom's new place are iffy... lots of blown fuses.

You guys get the power outages, we get the 4:40AM fire alarms, for once...

The fact that I'm essentially a 100% laptop worker at home (or at least have been), and that I always sit behind a surge protector, has made it not that much of an issue, but it's something I want to look into.
I think the key here is "rather reliable, and good for it's price" because there is certainly a range of options:
