Scholarship it may be, chickadee, but don't take it for the ultimate truth! Scholars, historical and otherwise, disagree all the time, and there WAS a historical figure of Jesus, and I think some of what that dude is saying is a little off-base, if interesting.
BUT, to your point, the facts of the Christmas Story DON'T add up! And only two of the gospels (Matthew and Luke) include it, and they don't agree on the details. But The UCC Christmas sermon I got treated to this year was about how you don't have to believe that story, because it was told as a parable. It was crafted in that manner for particular political reasons (which I would love to discuss), and the whole nativity scene and virgin mother stuff is made up...but that doesn't mean the message isn't a valid one. <3
have you see the zeitgiest movies? (possibly spelled wrong, but if you google it, they will fix). there are two, if you havent look it up when you have two hours, i bet you would dig it
