oh man. I totally remember when Media Play first opened in Denver. I worked for the media dept of Best Buy at the time. My bosses and I took a field trip to go visit the Media Play... I was wowed. I was also very sad to see them go. They were pretty awesome.
I just took a trip down cassette memory lane two weeks ago. I had a whole plastic bin of them in the garage. Of course, I have NO way of playing them anymore. Man, I was such a metal head. who knew.
Ahhh, I used to love Amoeba too when I live in the Bay Area! Especially the one in the Haight. That place breathes music through the walls. Sad we seem to be losing touch with the full tactile and interactive experience of music.
Amoeba in the Haight is pretty awesome. They have a DVD room now, too (I think* that's new since I've lived here.)
Tactile and interactive - Yes! I forget who it was in the documentary - Thurston Moore? - who mentioned holding the records, taking them out of their sleeves, smelling them, and listening to them. How much more interactive can ya get? digital can't offer that.
