here is the link to the journal where the story is posted...

i just wish that more people had been willing to listen ( Read more... )

As long as people remember, even second and third hand, the truth will out. Having met survivors of Auschwitz in the flesh, and a man who fought against them from within the Reich, I've seen the pain the survivors bear. In person, it's frightening. The photos and relics in various museums are a brief glossy glimpse of what those people live through.

Teach your children well. Without the memories, people forget easily and will begin to really believe that it was all a myth - like we lost the knowledge of how the pyramids were built. Or how glossed over all the various conflicts in Middle America have been - and those have been in our lifetimes.

My step-great-grandmother was in the camps. She only told me things once, and I vowed never to ask her anything again because of what it did to her to have her speak of it.

She lost her husband, parents, both siblings, all but 1 child in that camp. The personal humiliations she was put through by the guards, officers or other personnel at the camp were only hinted at because of my age, but I'm sure she was repeatedly sexually abused. Her body was covered with burns where cigarettes or cigars had been repeatedly burned her over and over again.

In the late 70's, I participated in the protests in Skokie, Illinois, with this wonderful woman by my side. I was 12 years old at the time and in my junior year in High School, the history books actually included this event. When I told my teacher I'd been there, another student told me that I was a fool and that the Holocaust was a joke and had never really happened. That was the last day I showed up at that school, and the next year I was at Waltrip and met your Mom.
