11. Practice not sleeping for 8 weeks.

Would recommend The Contented Little Baby Book (http://www.amazon.com/New-Contented-Little-Baby-Book/dp/0091912695/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231935108&sr=8-1) ...thought I was going to go completely insane after about five or six weeks with my first child...this book really helped.

Oh, and don't worry about 9. Holding your own baby is completely different to holding someone else's.

And you also haven;t included the most important thing...make sure your relationship with you husband is as strong as it possibly can be, because nothing will test it like having a child.

11. Will be big for Cody; I'm already an insomniac.

Thanks very much for the link.

I'm pretty confident about that last part. We've been great together through my whole breakdown thing; it's been on the one good thing. But I'll definitely keep it in mind.

good luck, katie-kate! you and cody will be wonderful parents. it's great that you've made all of these goals for yourself. just be the best kate you can be, and that baby will teach you everything else you need to know!

This is a great, well-reasoned list. All the best wishes for your success. For #8, have you considered volunteering with Girl or Boy scouts?

Thank you. And that's a good idea, although I was a pretty lousy Girl Scout in everything except songs, baking, and cross-cultural knowledge.

Gosh, how'd you guess! Anyway, yes, we'd love to.

It's less that I think a person needs every single one of these things to be a good parent as I think they'll help me pull myself together more. I did just have the situation where I had nine months to do one class worth of school work was too fallen-apart to bring myself to touch it. Anything that can help me feel a little more self-disciplined will work towards the overall plan.

I've got a year to try to put this into action before we start trying, so I'll see how it goes, but I'll definitely keep everything you've said in mind.
