I've decided I'm going to buy myself a computer for christmas because....well....because I can!!! And that is the only reason I really need, isn't it. That and I make more money now so I can actually afford to buy one without breaking the bank, so to speak. The problem is I want to buy a PC laptop and I have very little experience with anything ( Read more... )

I can offer some suggestions but first I want to mention my own experience with buying a laptop. I bought one a few years ago for two reasons: My wife worked for Compaq just as it was being bought by HP so I could get a great deal on either brand, and I had always wanted one. After picking one out and it arriving in the mail, I loved it... for about a week. Then I realized I had no actual use for a laptop and using it as a desktop system kinda sucked. The screen was only 15" and the keys on the keyboard were not as large as I was used to. It's designed for portability not usability. I had a nice model and it was fast, had the features I wanted, and as a laptop was a nice one... but I just didn't need a laptop. I never went anywhere were I would take it... so it was a pointless purchase ( ... )

I want a laptop that basically functions as a portable computer gaming machine. I want it to be able to run the new Sims game and possibly some older games (I'm not sure if I can buy Diablo II for Windows). The new Apple Powerbook sounds cool but i'm just a wee bit impatient. Cost is not the big of a factor, I'll be working thanksgiving so i'll be getting payed for the holiday (and we get paid for both thurs. and friday) plus payed doubletime for working on both days. Curious, do computers that have the windows OS come with Word/Excel or do you have to buy that extra.

Sometimes when you buy a new computer you can get MS Office for pretty cheap but your best bet, in my opinion, is to simply pirate it. It's been quite a few years since I paid for a copy of Office... and I've never paid for Windows yet I always have the latest version, with the latest security stuff too. Your computer will come with Windows though so no concern there. Things like Office, Photoshop, games... you can pirate all of that stuff. I pirated Sims 2 for Rebecca... works great. With games it's a bit trickier and since they don't cost all that much, if you really like Sims I say just buy it. But stuff like Office where it's a few hundred, or Photoshop which is like $700, it's much easier to pirate... and those are very easy to pirate. They only use a serial number for protection unlike games. I pirated Doom 3, HL 2, and F.E.A.R. recently with no problems... but I can't play any of them online... which I wouldn't do anyway so that doesn't bother me ( ... )
