Writer's Block: Signature Style

Apr 11, 2010 01:27

My style right now is probably best described as "I'm too cheap to wear much other than jeans and t-shirts." Given money or access to a good thrift store, my style is a bizarre mix of early- to mid-1900s fashion (specifically 40s and 50s), international influences with regard to color and pattern of fabric, subcultural elements based on the steampunk or goth scenes, and quirky random accessories like picnic baskets used as schoolbags and foot-shaped earrings. I'm completely addicted to large sparkly brooches.

So basically, I'm somewhere in the scheme of "indie chick", except that I don't wear skinny jeans and I tend to listen to a lot more metal and otherwise screamy music than my appearance would betray.

I'm a huge fan of old Hollywood, but I don't try to emulate a specific person's style. I just love the clothes in general because they catered to an hourglass figure, which is what I have.

I'm a thrift store diva by nature, so that's how I update my wardrobe if at all possible. Also, sales and internet-fu. I've found trench coats for three dollars and corsets for ten, oversized jewelry for two dollars and one of my prom dresses for thirteen. All else fails, I'm fairly good at altering clothing when I see fit to make it into something I love. That gets me from season to season still dressed like I want to be.

My current clothing-wanted-list includes a 50s style dress in warm colors preferably with a fitted bodice and full skirt, a knee length pencil skirt, a pillbox hat, sturdy spats that can be worn with heels, menswear vests, a wide waist-cincher-esque belt, and more crazy purses to add to my collection. It's a standing list that sort of waits in the back of my mind until I can find something fitting. I've got my eye on a dress as we speak...
