I liked it! QUITE A LOT ACTUALLY, though I sometimes felt like I was watching The Cell all over again. Excision was a much better movie in my estimation but it had the same 'gaze into the crazy person's mind' gimmick. I would love to watch a gimmicky film that did it the other way; put you in these horrifying dream sequences and then started flashing occasionally to the ~normal world.
Anyway, I had meant to do a Let's Watch collection of notes on it. Except. I got interested and forgot to do that. :x Can't really complain about that beyond the fact that I am real-time-commentaryless. I did happen to note one timestamp: 11 minutes in, I decided OH HEY I ENJOY THIS. That would be the scene where Fetish Pauline was crawling all over a boy with the top half of his head chopped off.
I read a couple of reviews before actually starting the movie myself. One said that this should be considered an extremely dark comedy rather than a horror film and I agree. I was sneering more often than I was getting glassy-eyed over gore, BUT the humour was an enjoyable element. I can't really think of any scene where I just want to scream SHUT UP AND EVISCERATE SOMETHING. I thought Pauline was genuinely interesting; I spent most of the film trying guess how she would act in various conversations, whether she would be on or off when she talked to her mother or her classmates, and I liked that her dialogue sssort of alluded to the fact that she had two distinct approaches to dealing with people: caring about what they thought of her, and not caring at all.
The end did unnerve me. I get very freaked out by 'timed' situations. Like if someone is reaching for another character and may or may not have enough time to grab them (the pale man in Pan's Labyrinth, oop) I usually get really, really uncomfortable even if it would ostensibly be an okay thing for the character to be 'caught'. So I was like 'Will she get to finish???? Are we going to witness any kind of aftermath?????'
I did get pissed off a couple of times. Is that just the standard teenage-dude movie reaction to menstrual blood? Because goddammit. I'd much prefer to watch him grapple for a second with morbid fascination before going 'okay why not' or just... be apathetic but no, it's always revulsion. Every. Time. 8[
This was a pretty good film overall! I wish I thought that I could recommend it to more people without making them never talk to me again, but for those who do enjoy gory stuff and a bit of body horror this is fully enjoyable~
