Life has been busy, which means life needs distractions, which means I have seen an amazing number of movies lately. Which is awesome, because before two weeks ago I think the last time we went to the theater was February.
I am Number Four:
Surprisingly enjoyable. I went to wikipedia immediately after finishing this movie wondering how many books have been written and if the library would have them all. And to my surprise I learned only the first one had been published! They started a movie series with only one book! It was a good movie though - interesting and intense, but still Disney fun. I found the lady friend kind of annoying but not overly so, and the geeky other boy likewise. He could have been more geeky and lovable, but instead they tried to do it half way and it mostly worked. Number Six though was AWESOME. We all agreed she was our favourite character. I still want to read the book, it sounds like there's a lot more detail about who these protectors are and about the world they all came from, but I enjoyed the movie. It was fun and they blew things up. *g*
And then there was
Cowboys & Aliens:
WAS AWESOME. Because its COWBOYS and ALIENS. Duh. Also: Daniel Craig was enjoyable - he seemed older than in Bond (which he is, but I mean that they didn't try to hide that fact too much) and did the gruff-but-good thing well. Harrison Ford stole the show for me, I fall for the little smirks every time. He's really quite an asshole at the beginning, but they did a great job of letting his character show though. The characters really made this movie - for all that the effects were fun and the plot enjoyable, they populated the world with interesting characters with regular but not annoying lives who are taken from their everyday concerns and decide they are willing to fight something much more powerful than themselves to get their loved ones back. I liked it. Except for the lead lady, because she was annoying. When she dies Robyn and I high-fived. But then she came back. Blah. She tried to make herself mysterious, and instead she was only annoying. But! Overall the movie was awesome. There was well-placed humour and some great lines, and my husband and I always love those. We quote them back and forth for hours.
Contrast this to:
Skyline:
OMG AWFUL. Just really really terrible. Luckily Nick had it so we watched it from his file and didn't pay to see this trash compactor of a movie. Still had good effects but a terrible plot-line and characters I couldn't care less about. It was so bad we fast-forwarded most of the movie and only paused to watch people get eaten. It was that awful. The end could have been cool, if only I cared one lick about the characters. Which I didn't. So no, it wasn't cool at all. It was stupid.
Whereas:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Halllows part 2:
Which was okay. I mean, I enjoyed it. As Robyn said, it was quite artsy, and a little long an drawn-out, but then so was the book. And the artsy bits were nice and interestingly done. It felt like they were trying for a massively epic movie, and they did an okay job. The end was handled better than I thought it would be, too. And the bits they changed from the books were okay, I think. They made it work. The Red Shirt montage at the end worked well enough for me. I was okay with the movie. I'm not going to run out and see it again, but it worked.
But!:
The Adjustment Bureau:
Really stole the show. This was a movie my mother-in-law rented over the satellite at the request of my brother-in-law, and when I read the summary I was like really? I mean - really? A politician and a ballerina? Is Curt losing his touch? But then it completely blew my socks off. Unlike Cowboys & Aliens, I fell in love with this leading lady. She was fantastic. She almost stole the movie. In fact, if Matt Damon wasn't so awesome, she would have. Fortunately he is. I loved the pace of this movie, the realism they injected into a politician's life, and the way the girl wasn't just left behind. I was so happy when she wasn't going to take him back and he explained - or tried to explain - everything. And we saw her weigh her choices and decide to go for it. Awesome. Absolutely lovely. Would see this again in a heartbeat. I want to understand more of it the second time around, but not in the same way as something insanely complicated like Inception. Instead this was delightfully mysterious, and one of those well written movies where when the reveal comes, its not disappointing, but uplifting.
There isn't anything else on my radar to go see, though I am trying to stock up on good movies to watch between 2 am and 4 am feedings. I foresee much couch-time in my future *g*.
