My Number One

Waiting inside me with you, with you.
In my heart, it will be forever you.

Hyukjae watches as Donghae practices their new routine in one of the many training rooms found at the SM building.  For a second, he contemplates joining his lover, but decides against it as he leans back against the wall, favouring to watch the intricate dance unfold before him.  He examines the fierce expression on Donghae’s face and a small smile finds its way onto his own.  He doesn’t need to join him-just being able to witness this moment is enough for Hyukjae.

Donghae dances as though it’s a must.  He dances with enough force to shake the floor and bruise his body.  But he dances with a smile on his face.  He doesn’t mind the hardships that come with a dance; in fact he relishes in the feeling of learning a new routine.

Hyukjae knows all this because he understands Donghae the best.  He feels the same way.

To Hyukjae, the best dancer isn’t him-never him.  Hyukjae knows his movements are precise and sharp and flawless but sometimes-sometimes, that’s just not enough.  Sometimes his moves lack the passion necessary to make a dance complete.  Whereas people like Donghae, on the other hand, oozes passion from his very pores.  Every step, every twist, every turn has a feeling of raw passion that leaves Hyukjae breathless.  Hyukjae can only hope that he can portray even half of the fervour Donghae has.  Somehow, he feels that just dancing with Donghae brings out a new sensation in his dance-without him, Hyukjae is like a closed book, full of potential yet held back from bringing perfection.

As Hyukjae ponders this, he thinks, not only can Donghae dance, but he can sing.  Hyukjae has known this for a long time.  For him, the best voice in the group isn’t Ryeowook, it isn’t Kyuhyun and it isn’t Yesung either.  Even though Donghae’s voice isn’t as sweet as Ryeowook’s, isn’t as profound as Kyuhyun’s and most certainly isn’t as masculine as Yesung’s voice, to Hyukjae, Donghae is always number one.  He has his own unique voice that no one else could ever duplicate.

To Hyukjae, Donghae’s voice is very-very romantic.  It portrays emotion that can’t be found just anywhere.  His thoughts and feelings are always conveyed through his voice.  And Hyukjae wouldn’t change that for the world.  Just like his dancing, Donghae’s voice has this raw passion about it that no one could ever even hope to imitate.  Hyukjae especially likes it when Donghae decides to serenade him during one of their many romantic dates.

Hyukjae doesn’t mind the slight dialect Donghae brings around him like a puppy following his owner.  In fact, he quite likes it.  He likes being the only one able to perceive the slight difference in the other’s words.  But Hyukjae admits, with a small tinge in his cheeks, he likes it the most when Donghae gets so excited, his Mokpo accent tumbles out uncontrollably.  Donghae wouldn’t be Donghae if he could speak like everyone else.

Every time Hyukjae is up on stage, performing “Beautiful” with Donghae, his heart beats until its pounding right against his ribcage.  He tries not to blush when they make eye contact and touch their hands together because in his heart-even though he can’t tell anyone-he knows that Donghae wrote the song while he was thinking of him.  For him.

However, Hyukjae thinks, just as Donghae’s dancing is mesmerizing and just as Donghae’s voice is striking, Donghae’s rapping is breathtaking.  Hyukjae remembers-fondly of course-of their trainee days when Donghae begged Hyukjae to teach him to rap so he could show it as his new personal talent for upcoming week.  It was hard to teach Donghae while he looked so adorable, all breathless and whatnot.  When Donghae finally did manage to learn, Hyukjae was prouder than he had ever been.  Donghae’s rapping was a sound Hyukjae desperately longed to hear; he was disappointed when he found out that they would no longer be rapping together.  In fact, the only rapping Donghae would be doing at all would be in Chinese.

But despite all that happened, to Hyukjae, Donghae would always be his number one.

Donghae watches as Hyukjae writes down some lyrics to a song in his head, about to leap into reality for the first time.  He watches as Hyukjae hums a catchy tune under his breath-most likely to accompany the newfound words scribbled into the other’s notebook.  Donghae decides against disrupting his best friend, opting for a more subtle approach as he slides down the wall in a smooth, fluid motion.  He smiles to himself as he hears Hyukjae’s sweet voice echoing through the room.

For Donghae, the best voice in Super Junior belongs to Hyukjae.  It’s the voice that lulls him to sleep every night and it’s the voice that makes him feel at home-no matter where they are.  Although Hyukjae never gets many singing parts, Donghae finds that Hyukjae’s part in a song is always, always his favourite.  Whether he’s rapping beyond human capacity or singing a soft melody, Hyukjae’s voice is the first thing he thinks of when Donghae is asked who his favourite singer is.

When Hyukjae sings, Donghae feels like begging his managers to allow Hyukjae more parts.  It’s only fair that the most beautiful voice of the group gets to sing more.  However, Donghae never voices his opinions-other to the man himself-since Hyukjae is embarrassed to have too many lines in a song.  Donghae respects his decision and is secretly happy that Hyukjae refrains from sharing his voice to the world.  Donghae knows that the soft, comforting lullabies Hyukjae sings for him are a special privilege that he refuses to share with anyone else.  Donghae loves him for that reason alone.

When Hyukjae decides to write down his thoughts, Donghae knows that they’ll eventually become a song.  The words morph and rearrange themselves until they speak of undying love and the idea of forever.  Donghae likes music but he likes it even more when Hyukjae writes it.

Especially when it’s for him.

When Hyukjae raps, Donghae feels as though his breath is sucked right out of him and the world slips from his feet.  It’s such a wonderful, beautiful thing that Donghae can’t help but feel enthralled.  From the deep, soothing tenor of his voice to the rapid, profound words coming from his heart-Donghae can’t decide what he enjoys more.  Being able to listen to those quick words is enough to make Donghae’s face freeze with a silly smile for the rest of the day.

However, Donghae is one of the very few that know rapping is not Hyukjae’s favourite thing to do.

Dancing.  The mere words show Donghae a vision of Hyukjae popping as though he has something to prove.  And he does-Donghae knows all of Hyukjae’s insecurities and he accepts the other despite of them.  He accepts the other because of them.

Dancing is one of the things Donghae likes best because he can share it with Hyukjae.  Although, sometimes, he’d rather just watch as the other performs until he is too exhausted to even move.  Donghae didn’t mind really, since he would always be there, handy with a towel, a bottle of water and some strawberry milk, ready to reenergize his lover when he needed it most.

Although Hyukjae has trouble expressing himself verbally, he does it through dancing and writing.  With a single jerk of his head, Donghae recognizes Hyukjae’s foul mood.  With a slight bounce in his step, Donghae acknowledges Hyukjae’s extreme happiness.  Nothing is hidden when Hyukjae is dancing- especially to Donghae.  Donghae can see through that fierce expression Hyukjae has on and although it looks incredibly hot, Donghae knows it’s a mask to hide his true thoughts from the world.  Or at least from everyone excluding Donghae.

To Donghae, dancing is one of the things they do together just because they can.  Although they dance next to Shindong and Sungmin and Leeteuk as well, Donghae feels that as long as they are next to each other, nobody can invade the bond the two share.  And that’s the way Donghae likes it.

While others may not view Hyukjae as the best in any field, to Donghae, Hyukjae is forever his number one-forever his favourite.  Hyukjae knows that and he makes an effort to show Donghae that he feels the same way.  With that in mind, the two continue to be who they are-their lives forever entwined.
