What's a Mezuzo?

A mezuzah is a little box in the doorframe that contains a scroll with a Jewish blessing - required for practicing Jews. The one in our door isn't 'valid' apparently - it's a photocopy and they're supposed to be hand-written.It also doesn't look like most of those I've seen in pictures
