"The usual?"

"Same scum, different night." JC's tone was as bitter as the blood he lapped from his upper lip. "Never ends. Doesn't even get interesting."

Chris sighed, standing up from the desk and walking across the room to meet JC at the door. "This can't be a lost cause, baby," he cooed, uncharacteristically gentle, resting his hand on his lover's cheek. "At least we're doing something."

"We can't stop them." JC pulled away from Chris, walking to the window, watching the rain land against it in the first strain of sunrise. "They'll keep doing this, they'll - more people will end up this way - fucking monsters -"

"Will you quit using that word already?" Chris's reply was hoarse. "Will you quit calling the man I love a monster? God, we both know you're not."

JC turned away from the window, drawing the shades. "What would you call it, then? Feeding from the life of the innocent?"

"Fuck, Chasez, I do that every time I order a hamburger." Chris grabbed him by the wrists. "We're making things better, Jace. We're making things right."

JC closed his eyes, then reopened them slowly, tracing his long fingers down Chris's scruffy cheek. "Things will never be right. Never again."

Chris bit his lip softly. He heard JC whimpering through his dreams during the day. Heard him begging mercy from an unknown force, watching the man he loved grow old and die, facing his own eternal waking life alone. The nightmares he never told Chris, the fear he'd never speak.

"It's getting light out," he murmured, leaning up to kiss JC gently, not even tasting a stranger's blood on his lips. "Go get some rest."
