My day to day activities as a medical student include a lot of studying, a lot of pimping from attendings, and a lot of feelings of inadequacy.  even though the setting is very much academic, it is more so clinical.  the most striking thing about my days is the amount of pain and suffering i see on the floor of the hospital.  in some ways, my 9 ( Read more... )

A few months ago there was a Newsweek article about a study that measured (to the best of its ability) empathy to pain. Doctors scored slightly worse than the average population. It was pretty clear from the article (as well as common sense) that it was a defense mechanism. Good doctors still have empathy, of course, but it's to be expected that the constant exposure to suffering and extreme emotion would desensitize them, even just a little.

Nothing you wrote sounded corny. It makes perfect sense, and in today's world, we all need little reminders from each other of the basics of life, the fundamentals. Your second paragraph is a perfect example.

Keep on truckin' and take care of yourself. The world needs people like you.
