You know There are things that people say that are totally acceptable for everyone but if you really think about it I wonder how we get away with it! Case in point everyone saying stuff like ohh thats GAY (to mean ohhh thats bad or dumb or so) and then they say I'm straight to denote I'm good or fine etc ( Read more... )

I'm sorry that your friend hurt you....and it's interesting that you mention how we say things like "that's so gay" and mean only a joke. In the end, it's wrong....some may say that people that think that way are too sensitive, but perhaps people aren't sensitive enough...and then good people like you get hurt. Unfortunately, it's just they way it is and will be for a very long time. Chin up, girlie....you're not on the bad side...remember God loves everyone!

hey hey now thats not fair... I dont think you're "wrong" girl!!!
I'm perfectly aware of those everyday "sayings" just like I'm also aware that calling something "lame, retarded, or crazy" is equally sensitive because you never know who will be offended. Its good though that you are letting people know that it does offend you because at least people will have a heads up. Other then that all we can do is point it out to people and hopefully they'll take it into consideration.

you sound empathetic to the plight but your reasoning has faults.. making a comparison between being called "gay" and being called "lame, retarded, or crazy" are two completely differrent things.. when people say something is gay they are taking the word out of its intended context (to mean homosexual) and putting a negative connotation on it and subconsciously degrading homosexuals to think that they are "bad, or dumb, or stupid"... but saying that someone is lame isnt the same thing.. if i say someone or thing is lame im not taking it out of its intended context im using the word properly to convey my feelings about it being dumb or stupid... no one is going to argue that lame is used in a positive light and by me calling someone is lame means taking it out of context and using it in a false context.... i really dont think Siobahan or anyone should have to "let people know" that calling things "gay", unless you mean "happy" is offensive to them... thats a friggin given..

So basically.... mew_isaki February 27 2004, 09:20:37 UTC
Being retarded, lame, or crazy is bad?
Hmm, I dont know about that

"when people say something is gay they are taking the word out of its intended context (to mean homosexual) and putting a negative connotation on it and subconsciously degrading homosexuals to think that they are "bad, or dumb, or stupid"

same can be said chica

when people say something is retarded they are taking the word out of its intended context (to mean mentally handicapped) and putting a negative connotation on it and subconsciously degrading the mentally handicapped to think that they are "bad, or dumb, or stupid"

i didnt use "retarded" as my example, youre the one lumped those 3 very differrent words together as if they're interchangeable... but basically

adj : relatively slow in mental, emotional or physical development.

when i call someone or something "retarded" i use/mean it in its intended context... perhaps you dont... which is why you couldnt understand my first argument... perhaps you're retarded

Many people who make comments like "it´s gay" (not in an Irish accent!) or people who want to "convert" people into being heterosexual are usually gay themselves and are too embaressed to admit it. For this reason, I really admire you for being open about it, because really, it is not easy in this world. Good for you, and never doubt yourself, because you are NOT "wrong".
