Snow crisps underneath his feet as Yuya roams outside.
Intentionally he only went out because he needed to walk Choco, but being out makes him remember why he likes the winter season so much.
The way his breath becomes one with the frosty air and creates a little fog every time he breathes, leaves him giggling. In the distinct steam that lingers in the air he sees all kind of shapes; a heart, a star and in the end even his dog.
With an earnest face he tells Choco that the footprints that follow them are made by an invisible person, and as if she believes every word of what he’s saying the little dog barks towards the air.
Yuya grins, being outside feels nice.
When a single snowflake lands on Yuya’s nose, he wrinkles it and looks up at the sky. However, not the heap of gray clouds are what catch his attention, it’s a blue balloon, stuck in one of he higher trees.
Blinking, he watches the helium filled rubber floating between the branches. He winces and hopes the wind will stay this gentle, so the balloon won’t pop when the strong breeze pushes it towards the sharp edges of the trees.
As he watches, almost mesmerized by the bright blue balloon, a memory from his childhood sneaks up on him.
“Yuya, dear, hold this balloon tight? Okay? If you let I go, it will fly away.”
The young child nodded at his mother, the small hand clutching on the lace of his sky-blue balloon.
He pulled it down, and his fingers ran over the smooth rubber as he whispered, “please, don’t pop mister balloon.”
The balloon didn’t answer, but Yuya hadn’t expected him too. It was only a balloon after all.
As the boy started walking, the balloon floated behind him. Like a blue shadow, the blue ball silently followed the boy.
When Yuya looked over his shoulder, he could see the balloon making the sky look dull because of its radiant color.
A cheeky grin appeared on his younger face, and he started speeding up. The balloon followed him, keeping up with the child’s small legs.
A quick glance over his shoulder told Yuya the balloon was still with him, but because he didn't kept an eye out on the road he tripped and fell.
In order to protect his body, the small boy threw his hands to the ground, breaking his fall.
He lied there for a bit, sniffling. Falling did hurt a lot. When he got up again, he checked his knees, aside from a small bruise they were okay. He looked at his hands, and noticed a few little wounds and some, already dried blood. He looked at the palm of his hand and noticed something missing.
The balloon!
Bewildered the 5-year old looked around, only to realize what his mom had said.
“It will fly away.”
He looked up and saw his balloon. The blue stuck out, between all the green of the branches it had landed in.
The young boy jumped, hoping he would instantly grow a meter or 2 so he could grab the lace. But it was futile and softly, the boy started crying as he jumped up and down.
“Yuya, what are you doing, honey?”
He heard his mother’s soft voice.
“Mama!” The child cried, “my balloon!”
His mother looked up and shook her head, “Yuya, I had told you to keep on tight, didn’t I?”
The young boy looked down and nodded softly.
His mother took his hand, “come on baby, we’ll get you a new one.”
Trailing behind his mom, Yuya looked back at his beautiful blue balloon once more.
“I’m sorry, mister balloon.”
Yuya snaps back when he senses the presence of another person. Next to him is a boy, slightly hovering over him. He also looks at the balloon.
“Is it yours?”
Yuya wants to answer, but before he has the chance to do so, the boy jumps. Yuya thinks it’s impossible to get a hold of the lace, but he is proven wrong when the other boy bulls the blue balloon down with him.
Yuya blinks, amazed.
“Here,” the boy says, grinning. His eyes wrinkle when he does, and Yuya decides he likes it.
The boy grabs Yuya’s hand, and with a tacky bow he binds it around his wrist.
“Don’t lose it this time, okay?”
Yuya nods and the boy smiles at him. He then turns on his heels, makes an extravagant wave with his hand and starts walking away, leaving Yuya alone with Choco and the blue balloon.
He looks up and smiles at the balloon. The whistles between his teeth and starts walking. The balloon floating behind him, like a silent, blue shadow.
