This was five minutes' work in the yard. There was so much glass out there it was ridiculous. I worked out there ALL DAY just collecting glass. I would have continued on into dusk but I unearthed something truly evil. I thought it was cat poop until I picked up something of which I can not decribe, it was so foul. I think it was a dead thing. Ah, ( Read more... )

That sucks!
Does your area have free compost from the city or anything? You could bring buckets and buckets of it back there and dump it on top, once you clean up the worst of it.

The yard is 24 x 30, more or less. It would take *far* more dirt of any kind than we are willing to haul through our apartment to bury the glass. Our super said the landlord was planning on paving the yard, but we'd far rather have the dirt, once the glass is out of it.

If the glass is not just in the top layer: Maybe pitch-fork it all up to loosen the dirt, and then run a rake through it to pull out a lot of the glass? It wouldn't do it all, though.

I can't imagine trying to use a yard that was so glassy. We had one section like that in our first rental in Albany and just gave up after discovering how very MUCH glass can be in a few square feet. The yard we had at our 14th St. rental in Brooklyn was FULL of chunks of concrete. Someone must've demolished something back there at some point, and just left it. We were hauling huge chunks out of it for months when we'd wanted to be planting; never did grow anything there.

Oh, or once you loosen the dirt you could sift it - like panning for gold. ??
