Merlin cannot lie. All it takes is one inconspicuous question when he's distracted, and the truth slips out. That's why Merlin lays awake each night in bed practicing.
In his head, Arthur will ask, "How did you polish my sword so quickly?" And Merlin will say, "With a whetstone. It's not like I used magic or anything. That would be silly." (On second thought, perhaps Merlin will stop after the first sentence.)
Merlin mutters, "I ran from the kitchens," until it automatically follows "Why is my food still warm?"
Merlin prepares for the question "How did you finish the ridiculous number of tasks I laid out for you?" The answer is "Because I am a magnificent manservant and you had better remember it." (That one scarcely counts, since it's the truth.)
Merlin is so busy practicing his lies about magic that he accidentally tells the truth about something else.
When Arthur says, "You know you love me," Merlin says, "Of course I do."
It's not so bad, except that now Merlin needs to find a different time to practice. Arthur is particular about his sleep and doesn't like Merlin muttering in bed.
