eek I've been meaning to respond to your posts since I have also caught olympics fever and the thing that made me do it was your comment about Jeffrey Buttle. I LOVED him back in 2002 and was so sad to hear that he retired last year right before the olympics qualifying. I have yet to actually watch the mens short programs cuz I was out but I've always kinda had a soft spot for Johnny Weir. It's just kind of hard to dislike him because he knows what he loves and he doesn't care what anyone thinks about that.
I was crushed when I found out Jeff turned pro because I wanted to see him compete in Vancouver, but I can't blame him. Training can't be easy and he did win bronze in 2006 so he has all the important medals as a figure skater. Still, it would have been lovely to see him skate at the Olympics on home ice!
Johnny Weir has some of the best quotes and I love that he says whatever he feels like. If you want to chat about figure skating (men's SP or otherwise), I'll be around the next week watching the events obsessively. =)
Ok so I finally watched the short programs. I didn't really understand why you didn't like Evan Lysacek before because from what I saw he seemed pretty good but after watching his program I think I kinda get why. While his jumps and his technique in general seem really solid, I feel he is definitely lacking in the emotional department which is huge for me. I'll admit I'm not the biggest figure skating fan but if the skater is not putting any feeling into his/her skating then all the routines just get really boring. That was a huge problem with me for the majority of the pairs skating program. Also on a shallow note, all I could pay attention to was Lysacek's orangey tan.
I thought Weir had a pretty good program. He really isn't the strongest skater but he does bring on the entertainment. I can't wait to see his long program!
I'm pretty excited about the women's figure skating too cuz I heard the korean girl is really good.
Oh, the three skaters (Plushenko, Joubert and Lysacek) I dislike on principle because they're all doucehbags. Plushenko and Joubert think the quad is superior than footwork/transitions/in-betweens/etc. and that figure skating is regressing because other skaters concentrate on the artistry rather than the quad. Joubert was a total asshole when Jeff won worlds, saying he didn't deserve it because he didn't do the quad even though Jeff skated two fantastic, clean programs. I have no love for the two of them.
I've seen interviews of Lysacek and he has a bit of an ego (though to be fair, I'm seeing this through the Johnny Weir lens so it's quite bias) and I heard he was less than gracious when Jeremy Abbott won US Nationals this year. He did have a great short, I'll give him that.
For whatever reason, women's has always been my least favourite discipline! I'm really looking forward to dance and may pass out from spectator anxiety. *g*
