Day 03 - Favourite Role

It's a dead heat between Steve Baxter and the Ninth Doctor as far as my favourite role is concerned because ultimately they represent two sides on the same coin. Steve Baxter, a man trying desperately to be an all knowing god but is limited by his own humanity and on the flip side, Nine is almost like a god but is trying desperately to be human. Their personalities are completely opposite to each other as well. On the surface Steve seems to be a relatively meek man but underneath there's a powerful confidence begging to be released and when he becomes the savior, we see that inner confidence leak out as the bottle's finally been uncorked. In the case of Nine, we see this unbridled confidence in everything he does and he moves on from place to place never once taking the time to look back. It's only when we look inside we find a man who's so utterly and completely without faith in himself and owns a deep self hatred for his actions during the Time War.

It's in the makeup of their stories as well. Steve's character relies on surprising us with miracles that seem larger than life whereas Nine's character relies on the smaller scenes like talking about having a date with chips in order to make the larger than life seem smaller and more accessible. It's this irresistible, incredible introspective look into what makes us human which causes these two characters stand out the most for me whenever I talk about Christopher's work.

So all in all it comes down to a tie. Steve and Nine.
