I have a bunch of friends in Venice right now who could give you better advice than me once they get home. But--they all say that Europe is extremely expensive, especially in light of the euro/dollar exchange rate. One guy said that a few thousand of the $15,000 he spent there this semester was for transport (trains and short plane trips both).

Don't you wish you were the kind of person who could just casually drop $15,000? Or maybe you are. I'm not sure. I just wish I was...

definintely not. I can't even casually drop the few hundred it will take to buy a flight there, but I'm doing it. I know for a fact however that I will be able to geta round for less than a few thousand once I'm there, as I've been advised by my cousin who lived in ireland for a couple years. I just talked to my dad however, and he seems to be quite accepting of my wanting to do this, so maybe he'll try to help though I know he can't help too much.

I hope to go to Venice while I'm there.

i'm having this same problem. i'd like to stay in berlin, london, paris, and venice for a while but i'm not sure i'll be able to afford it.

at least the dollar gained a little bit of strength yesterday. hopefully it will continue. go america.

three weeks in europe cost about twelve hundred not including airfare, but two weeks of that i had free lodging and the other week i stayed in an overpriced hostel. i thought i was getting a great deal because i flew instead of taking a train. ugh. it looks ridiculous now but at the time it seemed like i was cutting costs everywhere and barely eating. oh well.

i think part of it was the horrible exchange rate.

That's what my friend Matt said. He was like, "You can get by on $9000 for a semester... if you eat bread and live in a hostel." Gross.

you'll have to plan out a detailed intinerary to know for sure. The costs could vary dramatically. Check out http://www.studentuniverse.com for discount flights. There are other sites out there with lists and information about youth hostels, just google it. If you fly on a certain day of the week, get your tickets more than 2-3 weeks in advance, stay with friends and keep a flexible schedule, you'll be able to travel cheaply. If you want to stay somewhere VERY cheaply, however, pull a Motorcycle-Diaries-style adventure and head to South America. $10/day will give you a room AND plenty of food. Transportation is always the most expensive part of a trip.
