Today we learn how to make this:
Okay, this is the first avatar tutorial I've made, so let's hope I don't stuff this up somehow. I wish you all the luck in the world if you attempt to do this.
1. Choose your uncoloured base. For this, I’ve chosen one of Ino from chapter 312 of the manga.
2. Copy your base, then create a new layer and set it on multiply. And then we colour in the base colours on that layer.
3. Create a new layer with the setting of multiply, and add the shading. And after that, create another new layer with the setting of screen. When you colour in on the screen layer, take care when it comes to where lines are, as screen will hide them. If there is an area of black you’d like to colour in, the best is to create a new normal layer, place it after the first colour layer and use that so you can use multiply and screen on it on the other layers. Merge the colour layers with one of the bases.
4. Duplicate the new coloured base, and place the saturation as -100 and the lightness as -50. This will become your real base for the project.
5. Duplicate the original colour base again and place it on top. Now place the saturation as -100 and lightness as -20. As well, use box blur with a setting of 2, or gaussian blur with 1.5. Then set the layer on screen.
6. Duplicate the original colour level again and put it on top. Box blur it at 2 or guassian blur it at 1.5. Then set it on screen.
7. Duplicate the original colour base twice and place both of them on top. On the top copy, set it on multiply. Then merge it with the other copy below it (which should be on normal). This way, you should get a darker version of the colour version. Then box blur or gaussian blur it, and set the layer on colour.
8. Duplicate the original uncoloured base and place it on top. Set the layer to either multiply or linear burn, and then shift the opacity setting until you think it looks right. (Mine is on linear burn, 30%)
9. The one thing I don’t exactly like about this is how much you have to tweak around with it afterwards to achieve the best look- as every time you make one, it will require different needs. For this, I got rid of the second unsaturated screen layer to give it slightly a darker look, and then created a new multiplied layer like in step 8, but instead of blurring it, I sharpened it before placing it on the top and set it to lighten.
10. Now all you have to do is add extras like text, border, ect. And tada, you’re done!
Here’s some other ones I have been able to make using this technique:
Good luck, and have fun!
