This is really interesting. Downey's always been one of those actors that I don't purposely follow, but I'll watch a movie if he's in it despite knowing nothing else about it because you're guaranteed a great performance, but I hadn't paid any attention to this whole salary debate. Can't fault the guy for making a shrewd business deal, but props to him for standing up for the rest of the cast getting fair treatment.
Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised I marvel put their Tony Stark doll away for a couple of years until the younger generation of fans (like the ones in my house) get old enough to pay any attention to who is playing the character, then reboot it with another trilogy. Honestly, the six year old doesn't know the difference between Downey and Depp, but he never mixes up Iron Man and Captain Jack.
All of this, yes. I've admired Downey as an actor since I first saw him in "Less Than Zero" and "Chances Are" (sometime in the 80s), and thought it was such a shame when he going the drug route. I'm delighted that he came back from that, and delighted to see him on my screen at any time.
I didn't watch any of the Marvel films (save the first two Spider-man w/Tobey McGuire) in the theatre until last year - after vaguely wanting to see "Thor" in 2011 and missing it - but when I saw the previews for "Avengers", I watched all of the films to prepare (including the early 2003 Hulk film), and found myself really enjoying Iron Man, which I'd never read in comics (any of Avengers-related comics, I was an X-Men girl). RDJ seems like the perfect embodiment of Tony Stark to me.
IM2 wasn't nearly as good, but IM3 knocked it out of the park. I saw it in the theatre yesterday, and look forward to seeing it again when it comes out on DVD.
