I have no life. People say this sometimes to be hyperbolic, but I am serious. Really. Cant you see that as we speak, I am shuffling toward you slowly, something not quite right about my posture or my gaze? OK, maybe not, but most of my days in the recent past it seems have consisted in a good amount of time spent indoors and immobile, sometimes not ( Read more... )

I've also been pretty bored and lonely here in Toronto. But last night I discovered a game I can play which seems to change things, and I think I really must play it more often. I call it the "who am I" game. I basically just go out, and pretend that I have some kind of total amnesia. That I have no idea where I am, or who I am. Or maybe I do know what this brain I'm inhabiting THINKS it knows about itself and its world, but I'm some kind of space alien or something, inhabiting this body, and sort of accessing the brain's information second-hand. `Hmm. Bryan seems to think home is that way, and he thinks boring stuff is that way. I wonder why. I`ll go find out. Look at this plant! How weird!`
Basically pretending that earth is an alien planet, and ours is an alien culture, and I`m inhabiting an alien body with alien ideas and habits and fears. I got really into the game last night, and the experience I found was, for a few minutes, almost exactly like a mushroom trip I had last fall. The mundaneness of everything just seemed to drop

I realized that I`m quite averse sometimes to games of make-believe, because I tend to think they`re just methods of escapism. But when I got into it, I discovered that I was actually doing the exact opposite, and I was immersing myself into myself and my world in a strange new way.

Have you tried taking a short trip? Like going somewhere new?

I know I'm in desperate need of a trip myself. Maybe next month. Mine will most likely just be to Corvallis this time though. Won't have much time for anything else. I want to drive through California soon though. There are a couple places I want to see and I remember you saying how much you enjoyed driving through Northern California and how I needed to drive through and see it.

Do you remember when and how we first devised those characters? We had those adventure people in Dusseldorf, which is where you were inspired to make up black hole, and my guess is he came before I made up superstar, right? Did we play superstar and black hole in dusseldorf, or was that something we started playing when we moved to Oregon?
