*cackles* Well, the doe is a patronus. This is very complicated, because it's Harry Potter lore, but basically everyone has a unique patronus and what that is depends on many variables. But it can protect and send messages to people--and if you're in love, sometimes your patronus will take the form of the person you love or their patronus. It so happens that this particular one is Snape's and he was in love with Harry's mother--so his patronus took the form of hers. It is the way he proves to Dumbledore that he would still do anything for his dahling Lily.
