This is the original entry posted for the We Need More Cowbell - Part 1 challenge at writerverse, reposted here for posterity since it has since been replaced in my fanfiction livejournal with the expanded version for Part 2's challenge.

Title: Sink, Swim
Pairing: Steve-centric, hints of Steve/Tony
Wordcount: 104
Summary: Steve's getting used to the 21st century. Mostly.
Disclaimer: I don't own the Avengers in any shape or form.
Notes: This was mostly written for the We Need More Cowbell - Part 1 challenge at writerverse, which I've recently joined. The fic had to be 100 words, give or take five. I wrote a handful of fics trying to reach that magic number, but this was the only one I could condense down this much. Still, I'm not pleased with the result- I think it turned out more choppy than anything.

Sink, Swim For the most part, Steve's getting used to the 21st century. He no longer jumps when Jarvis addresses him, nor is he utterly baffled by computers. And although he cannot help but stare when he sees Tony working on a project, it's been a long time since it was the ever-shifting diagrams that draws him in.

But sometimes when he takes a breath, he feels like stones are dragging down into his lungs instead of air. No one says anything when he excuses himself, but when Steve stares down at the wreckage of yet another punching bag, he cannot help but feel like he's failed.
