† ORIGINS †
The idea for this fic came to me almost a year ago after I had fallen in love with the Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood multiplayer. I had always loved the doctors in the AC universe, but in the beginning it was difficult to select him during games because he was such a popular choice. I found myself often playing as The Officer, aka Teodor Viscardi, and over time I developed an ungodly amount of sentiment for him as a character. Naturally, I decided that my two favorite characters should totally do it and toyed with the idea of writing a quick little one-off that would include hot men and creepy mask sex.
This did not go as easily as planned, obviously. Instead, I decided to write a novel-length piece entirely from Teodor’s point of view. Knives Don’t Have Your Back is a love story, but it’s Teodor’s story.

This fic would not have been possible without stumphed. It is as much her baby as it is mine. She is responsible for the fantastic album artwork and graphics, the HTML coding (aka “production value”), and the commas. She listened to me freak out over this story for almost a year. She painstakingly edited each chapter and explained to me the mechanics of sentence structure and pointed out when I was being an idiot. She has been my cheerleader and my champion. I lack the words to explain how integral she became to both this story and my own sanity. Seriously, that’s how my brain works. And to be honest I probably would have left out all the commas.

This story is not a work in progress. It is complete. I will be posting the chapters individually. There isn't a definite, iron-clad schedule but I plan on at least one chapter every other day. It takes time to code/format/polish each section and I thought dumping a 90k fic in its entirety might be overwhelming for both myself and the communities I post to.
† TIMELINE / UNIVERSE †
This fic references and utilizes the canon of Assassin’s Creed II and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, the short film Assassin’s Creed: Ascendance, and Assassin’s Creed: Project Legacy on Facebook. At the time this fic was written an encyclopedia for the Assassin’s Creed universe didn’t exist, nor was the AC wiki as thorough as it is currently. This story starts in the spring of 1501 and ends in the summer of 1505, with the majority of the plot occurring between 1502-1503. The timeline of AC:B is fluid at best, but I tried my hardest to remain true to the game as well as historical record. That said, there are a few deviations here and there to better serve the story, but not enough for it to be labelled as an alternate universe.

This is an optional section/quick refresher for those not as familiar with the multiplayer universe as they would like to be. You do not need all of this information to understand Knives Don’t Have Your Back, but these links might enhance your experience.
This section includes possible spoilers for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Project Legacy.
Teodor Viscardi (The Officer). In the entirety of the Assassin’s Creed universe, there are only two sentences that specifically mention Teodor Viscardi. One is in the multiplayer menu, where he is described as being responsible for leading many of Cesare Borgia’s ruthless campaigns. The other reference is in Project Legacy, where Fiora watches him compete in a horse race with Cesare Borgia and Donato Mancini. Had I known so little information existed about him before I began this story, I probably wouldn’t have even attempted something of this length.
Malfatto (The Doctor). Malfatto is mentioned several times in Project Legacy and is one of the three Templar targets Ezio assigns to his newly recruited assassins in AC:B. Despite all of these appearances, he never speaks a word or removes his mask. Naturally, I found that awesome.
Donato Mancini (The Captain). Donato is mentioned in Project Legacy alongside Teodor, and he is the target of one of Ezio’s Templar Agent missions. This story was written before other characters like the Knight and the Marquis were released, and I always thought Teodor and Donato would be good friends, what with being the only two Templar agents in the military.
Baltasar de Silva (The Barber). Baltasar appears solely in Project Legacy. He is Cesare Borgia’s master spy and works closely with Fiora Cavazza. He is both terrifying and magnificent.
Fiora Cavazza (The Courtesan). Fiora also appears solely in Project Legacy, which has an entire section devoted to her. In this section she encounters almost all of the multiplayer characters, including ones that didn’t make it into the console game. I definitely recommend checking out her page and reading about the strange world of Cesare’s underground Templar army.
Baron Octavian de Valois. De Valois appears in Assassin’s Creed: Ascendance and AC:B. Most everyone knows him as the French guy who kidnaps Bartolomeo’s wife and is kind of an ass. He is not a multiplayer character.
